Rightwing thinktanks unveil radical plan for US-UK Brexit trade deal: Groups linked to Trump and Fox want foreign competition in NHS and regulations bonfire
A radical blueprint for a free trade deal between the UK and the US that would see the NHS opened to foreign competition, a bonfire of consumer and environmental regulations and freedom of movement between the two countries for workers, is to be launched by prominent Brexiters.
The Cato Institute in the US and Daniel Hannan's Initiative for Free Trade (the one that was forced to change its name from 'Institute' because that is reserved for actual research organisations and not just lobby groups) in the UK.

I liked this particularly
The IFT/Cato Institute free trade deal recognises that its proposals are likely to be unpopular. “Health services would benefit from foreign competition, although we recognise any change to existing regulations would be extremely controversial,” it says. It recommends testing the waters with foreign competition in education and legal services first.

As had the Spiked-related institute of Ideas headed up by that Claire Fox...

Incidentally I noted this the other week.

Dr Joanna Williams, the new head of education and culture, worked at the University of Kent as both a senior lecturer in higher education and academic practice and a director of Kent’s Centre for the Study of Higher Education from 2007 to 2016.

She is a widely published author who has written on issues such as schools, gender and families, and earlier in her career she taught in both secondary schools and further education.

She also writes for online politics, culture and society magazine Spiked, covering topics such as why she believes that sex education should focus only on biology and not relationships.
But of course the ex-RCP team are still on the left...

Amazing how many in the media still "think" that. Or perhaps not.....

Even three decades ago in my student days the RCP were considered a bunch of weirdos, they stood in a few seats come the 1987 GE as Red Front - invariably polling a derisory vote. Their candidate in my patch (Newcastle Central) spent most of the university hustings ranting about Pol Pot :D

I think it's become more obvious over the past couple of years where their true sympathies lie - having an almost daily column (writing the same article) for The Spectator as Brendan O'Neill does...and people begin to notice.

OK, Twitter question for those on it.

Firstly I lost about 50% of the people I follow - they simply disappeared. And even when I go and Follow them again...the next day they're gone again.

Really infuriating but I can't see what's wrong. Any ideas?

Excellent one very early this morning on the World Service --
Running and Singing to Improve Maths and English -- BBC World Hacks

"" This week we go back to school, with two simple ideas that involve changing the day-to-day lives of pupils to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. The Daily Mile is an idea developed in a Scottish school by an enterprising teacher, which is now being adopted worldwide. It gets pupils to run a mile at a surprise moment during the school day, to break up their learning and burn some calories. Meanwhile, in Bradford, in the north of England, a previously failing school has found salvation through music. To improve its performance in core subjects including maths and English, it promoted music in the timetable and embraced a music-teaching philosophy pioneered in communist-era Hungary.""

That's an odd one, though I think Twitter can be prone to such glitches. If you tend to remain signed in, might be worth logging out and sign in again. Sometimes glitches just fix themselves. Or your account may have been hacked, but that seems unlikely.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I might have to live with it.

If I (finally) get a position with the OU I'm going to set up a new account under my real name and move a lot of the related Follows across and leave the ROT one for edu and politics stuff.

The proposals are sketchy but I'm concerned.

Sounds like they may be acceptable to Arlene Foster, but surely then not to Sinn Fein et al.

From the BBC
The EU, he said, would consider how and where physical checks on goods crossing the border were carried out and, critically, who performed them - amid reports the EU may be willing to allow British officials to do so.
"We are clarifying which goods arriving in Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK would need to be checked and where, when and by whom these checks could be performed," he said. "We can also clarify that most checks can take place away from the border at a company premises or at the markets."

Yes! There was also an interview with a LibDem conference attendee who, when asked if Vince Cable was cutting the mustard, said, "Yes. I've heard him say things that other leaders don't say."

Little realising (somehow) how hilarious that response was.
