Following on from one discussion yesterday.

If the Article 50 notice period were to be extended, and we therefore have to take part in the European Parliament elections in May 2019, will Labour / Lib Dem / Green / PC / SNP / +? all stand down and allow cross-party/non-party 'referendum' candidates have a clear run?

Short answer - I doubt it.

But apparently our PM has now said there is no question of our leaving "deadline" being extended. So we can all relax!

EU Council president Donald Tusk on 27 EU leaders Brexit discussion: "Everybody shared the view that while there are posiive elements in the Chequers proposal, the suggested element for economic cooperation will not work, not least because it risks undermining the single market"

Although I'm a bit doubtful about the Independent article tinybgoat linked to as no one else seems to be running with the story, it does seem to be the only way the Irish Border question can be realistically dealt with if we are to leave the CU and SM as May proposes. She would have to accept at least the possibility of an Irish sea border in order to secure the withdrawal agreement, though could still kick the can down the road by presenting it as a backstop only if nothing else is sorted by 2020 and leave much of the future relationship blank as is feasibly possible (though I have read she's already committed to presenting a declaration of direction of travel when presenting the withdrawal agreement - if true, the contortions necessary to keep it vague enough to command majority support but detailed enough to avoid accusations of presenting a "blind Brexit" will be something to behold!),

I think that is what they are slowly building up to, but it is still a matter of timing.

May's cynical comments today will back up those in Labour who think they should be cautious about this.

Remember that clip from Panorama where Olly Robbins told May that EU response to Chequers was good? How culpable is he in leading her to an outcome which nearly everyone has now rejected?

I can't quite decide which of the party leaders is looking forward to their conference speech less - I can imagine both sets of party managers wondering whether they could get away with calling the whole thing off...

Question Time tonight from the delightful Dewsbury.

A well behaved Yorkshire audience this week, no shouty gammons much to my surprise.

For the Conservatives we had Chris Skidmore, apparently vice-chair of the Tory party, who I'd never heard of and who couldn't think of a single thing the government might have done wrong when it came to the fiasco of our rail system, but was sure blaming the actual transport minister Chris Grayling wasn't fair. Other than that he was peculiarly bland. Like a weird Tory robot trying to be as inoffensive as possible.

We also had the lawyer and former chief prosecutor for the North West Nazir Afzal who quite gleefully listed all of Chris Grayling's failings, called for renationalisation of our railways, and a people's vote on any final deal with the EU. Splendid fellow.

For the Lib-Dems we had Vince Cable who said very little besides making a case for a people's vote, at least he didn't have an exotic spresm live on tv.

Labour's offering was Barry Gardiner who was mostly useless, and I'm not blaming him. Most of the programme was taken up talking about Brexit so a representative of the Labour Party he was in a no win situation and had to waffle while trying to fit square bricks into round holes while deciding whether to rescue the Kobayashi Maru.

And finally we have the utter arse that is Camilla Tominey, associate editor of the Daily Telegraph, who seemed wholly unaware of the poll of 25,000 newspaper readers released this week that said half of her own Telegraph readers would now vote remain if they were given the choice again. At one point she genuinely made an equivalence between Muslim's experiencing Islamophobia and Brexiters being mocked for being thick online. And got some applause for it.
