"Nissan becomes latest manufacturer to warn against hard Brexit"
In a statement to the Guardian authorised by the main board in Japan, Nissan said: “Since 1986, the UK has been a production base for Nissan in Europe. Our British-based research and development and design teams support the development of products made in Sunderland, specifically for the European market.
Ha, who wants stupid left hand drive cars anyway.
Actually interesting to see that quotes had been cleared at board level, I hadn't previously considered that some companies ethical/trading policies prevent them from political interference, so wouldn't speak out too strongly about brexit (also wouldn't want too release data that might influence share dealing, etc)

There's also a comment buried in there that Nissan have the UK government over a barrel at the moment - that one of the reasons they've remained neutral must lie in the correspondence and negotiations with the government that remain secret, but that resulted in, amongst other things, 80% of the North East's EU regional development fund in the most recent round being spent on a new 'International Advanced Manufacturing Park' opposite the Nissan factory.
Long read - Will Nissan stay once Britain leaves? How one factory explains the Brexit business dilemma

Yes, that is a major reason why business isn't "speaking out over Brexit" more.

CAR SALES FIGURES RELEASED
It’s Official: UK car sales crashed by over a fifth last month.

New figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show that 338,834 new vehicles were registered in September, a fall of 87,000.

'exceptional' circumstances

September’s large decline follows an unusually high August and a turbulent first eight months of the year as the market responded to a raft of upheavals, from confusion over diesel policy to VED changes and, latterly, transition to the new WLTP emissions standards.
Nothing at all to do with consumer and business confidence, oh no.

But its OK, everyone - May has ended austerity!

(even though she didn't inform her Chancellor about this the previous day)

If people currently receiving Tax Credits believe Theresa May when she says austerity is over, they are going to get a heck of a shock if they're transferred to #UniversalCredit and see their incomes drop.

Unless of course she expects to have to increase public spending to stave off the post-Brexit recession; whereas Hammond doesn't actually think we'll exit.

Amazon cutting benefits to fund pay rises, union says

Online retailing giant Amazon has been criticised for cutting benefits for UK warehouse workers, offsetting part of a pay rise announced this week.

The removal of employee share and incentive schemes could cost some workers £1,500 in a single year, according to the GMB union.

Amazon, it says, is imposing "a stealth tax on its own wage increase - a clear case of robbing Peter to pay Paul". (BBC News website)

"The UK and Ireland are closing in on a border solution"
She will offer to meet the EU half way on the vexed issue of the Irish backstop, agreeing to Brussels’ demands that Northern Ireland stay part of the single market regulatory area of the bloc. But, in return, she wants the EU to concede to Britain’s demands that under the backstop plan the whole UK, rather than just Northern Ireland, would stay in the customs union for a limited period until a UK-EU trade deal was finalised.
I thought they'd already rejected this idea?

As there's nowt else going on...I have news. The latest step upon my academic journey has just come through.

BA > MA > PhD > Visiting Fellow

Basically it means I have three years to write a book and article based on my thesis but including new research into a wider area.

So do I AK - I love the access it gives me to other libraries and online journals. And I won't have to pay to get into the Bodleian like I had to a few months back.

Time to dust off the thesis and see what nonsense I wrote.
