Labour MPs in fresh bid to legalise abortion in Northern Ireland

Interesting questions being raised about human rights, democracy and devolution. The government are passing legislation to take control in NI but simultaneously arguing devolution prevents them taking control of making crucial decisions for NI that impact human rights because addressing these issues are politically inconvenient to them. Against a backdrop of Brexit and the reform of abortion laws in the Republic of Ireland, these issues are becoming unavoidable, but May will nevertheless attempt to avoid them because of her own precarious position.

I know this is an obvious comment, but the NI government and the DUP particularly want to have it both ways - it is so essential that they are not treated any differently to the rest of the UK in areas that they don't want to be treated differently that doing so would be enough to bring the withdrawal agreement and possibly even the government down, and it is so essential that they are treated differently to the rest of the UK in areas where they do want to be treated differently that not doing so would be enough to possibly bring the government down.

Interestingly so far as I can see Sinn Fein support the ROI position.

The Freight Haulage Association are one of the organisations giving evidence to the leave select committee this morning. Their manifesto for arrangements on leaving the EU is here - essentially they need things to be exactly as they are now. Good luck with that. What they need to do this morning is engage with the detail of what will happen not just in the event of no deal but also in the event of an FTA without a close association agreement - for all of these sectors it will, as a starting point, mean the end of the present arrangements and much more restrictive regulations in place.

Progress on the #Brexit negotiations can be 90%, 95% or even 99%, but as long as there is no solution for the Irish border, as long as the Good Friday agreement is not fully secured, for us in our Parliament progress is 0%.
