Morning all.

I made the mistake of staying in bed after 8:10 and therefore listened to the US Ambassador being asked some very easy "So, what do you think about Trump?" questions with no follow-up.

Although, this seems to have been the norm for the rest of the programme. But if you ask history writer* Andrew Roberts to be guest editor I guess that's what you get...

*A deliberate distinction between that and historian...

For me, 2018 was the year when London lost the right to govern the UK.

Away from Brexit, in my sphere there seems now to be essentially no governance of Higher Education. So why should Universities here in Yorkshire continue to be obliged to follow the dictats of apparently dysfuctional organisations in London?

And I'm pretty sure this is the case right across Government. Which ministry is actually delivering proper governance?

In fact this is not a party political point. I didn't agree with Jo Johnson on many policy aspects, but there was a clear coherence and strategy when he was in charge of HE. Something to plan on.

Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool and other city councils (these are the ones I see most of) soldier on doing decent work to make their regions function, utterly despite what is going on in the capital.

I think proper regional govt would be A Good Thing, but we'd never get beyond arguing about the boundaries.

And there is genuine debate where they should go in many cases - should Cumbria be in the NE or NW for example?

“Some people would say this is not the right day to talk about our broken society. Well I don’t agree, I think when things like this happen it is right to stand back, to reflect and to ask ourselves some pretty deep questions about what has gone wrong in our society. And let me say at the outset this is not pointing the finger at one party or one Government, some of the things that have been going wrong in this country have been going wrong for years and for decades.
8 years of Tory government later:

IF it were not so fatal to so many and so painful to so infinitely many more, those who are left upright would have a jolly time laughing at this government .

Well, I still can't help laughing at them, even tho it's all so grim.

Hardly a 'weapon' to win anything , but at least it helps me :-) xx
