There is no end state in our relations with Europe. There is only millennia of collaboration, conquest, disputes, exchange, competition and alliance.
We live on a small archipelago just off the north-west coast of Europe.
Before the railway revolution, getting a shipment from Calais to Dover, Antwerp to Ipswich, Hamburg to Hull, was easier than hauling it over the Pennines.

I'm not familiar with Dan Snow's work. I liked this article.

Some posts below the line of Snow's article think it's a pro-Brexit piece. I don't think it is.

Congrats to @samueltombs and commiserations to Patrick “Economists for Free Trade” Minford.

(And worth remembering when certain people have a pop at the OBR forecasts and praise Minford’s).

New year set for frosty start as odds of coldest January on record slashed

‘Beast from the east’-style cold snap predicted with forecasters warning of snow by end of week

As the odds were cut on this month ending as the coldest January on record, forecasters warned of snow on hills by the end of the week, with the possibility that lower ground could also be affected. (Guardian)

Back from a pretty scrappy 1-0 win which keeps us at the top.

Fancy a thread about ordering crickets over the interweb? Of course you do...

People really enjoying laying into Julia Hartley-Brewer for complaining about the London Eye being transformed into a European flag during the fireworks.

Good mocking use of the term "snowflake"

One good thing about 2019 IMHO is that people are calling it Twenty Nineteen rather than Two Thousand and Nineteen.

Finally!
