Have entered the Great Scottish Run in Glasgow a mere 31 years after entering when it was the Peoples' Marathon which didn't last long and converted to 25k for reasons I never understood for a while,now a half (or 10k).

There is a popular 20k Brussels event maybe trying to replicate that,but it annoys half or full marathoners in being not quite one.

Of course. I know this result is replicated, more or less, throughout UK constituencies. The number of people not voting often exceeds the number of votes received by the winning party. We don't see that making many headlines in the news on a regular basis, do we? Of course not. It suits bad parties just fine gaining power on the strength (ha!) of some turning out and many more too distracted and told their vote doesn't matter so they don't vote

That may partially account for the result of a one-off vote slapped together by an indolent Tory PM in June 2016

I'd say that any and every possible outcome will be accompanied by political crisis, it's already started.

Although I agree low turnouts are not good for democracy, I would point out that Australia, where everyone must vote, is just as likely to return right wing governments as anywhere else and polling done on how non voters might vote in this country tend to suggest the split between parties wouldn't vary hugely from those who do vote. Of course there is potential for a political party to motivate the non voters who are inclined to their policies in particular to turn out rather than stay at home as normal and this is what Leave.EU seems to have managed to do during the referendum (using controversial, and in some cases possibly illegal, money and methods). So I'm not convinced getting everyone to vote would lead to Chris Grayling being voted out or to the left doing especially better, unfortunately. Quite a few of those non voters in Epsom and Ewell could well be Tory voters who don't bother to turn out because it's such a safe seat they don't need to.

So I don't think getting more people to vote would change a great deal, certainly not as much as changing our voting system would. If more votes actually counted, as in a PR system, the political preferences of the people who did choose to vote would be better represented. For example, I vote Labour in my constituency and just get Rees-Mogg to represent me. In the European Parliament elections I vote Labour and get the lovely Clare Moody to represent me even though a majority of South West votes went to the Tories or Ukip, votes which are represented by 2 Tories and 2 Ukip MEPs. So although I'm completely and utterly outvoted locally, I still get someone to speak for me and my views and she can band together with other Labour MEPs to create a real force for the left in the EU parliament. I'm going to miss that direct democratic link to the heart of European affairs when it's gone. When we leave the EU my relationship with the rest of Europe will be via our national government which is much more remote.

I think it's part of his job, rather than an obsessive hobby! It's certainly a very thorough diagram. And I agree any outcome will lead to a political crisis because there is no clear majority for any avenue either in Parliament or the country. I felt early on that a majority of the country could be persuaded to a soft Brexit option remaining in the single market because it would mean we would have left the EU, fulfilling the referendum mandate, but would still have a relationship with the EU and life would go on pretty much as normal without the EU elections which was the main spike for anti-EU feeling thanks to the efforts of Nigel Farage and Ukip. It needed a lot of talking up, though, with lots of MPs making similar points about how we would change our practices in relationship to free movement of people to make use of all the restrictions currently available to us. Instead both May and Corbyn have focused on the reasons to leave the single market rather than the reasons to remain (unlike what Ed Miliband would have done judging by his comments immediately after the vote) and so it is going to be much more difficult to persuade the public behind soft Brexit now, so even if it happens, it will be just as controversial and disliked by many people as leaving with no deal or remaining even though immediately after the referendum many polls suggested there was a majority for remaining in the single market.

I agree with all that, Willow. The whole lot of us voting won't guarantee (what I consider) a better government. I thought about all that and a lot more in between writing rambling and sometimes inaccurate posts. Most people aren't bad and work well with others. Having greater voting turnout can better reflect that.

I think Ms Ridge is too lenient on Grayling when suggesting chance played a part in his failures by using the word, 'misfortunes'.
Disastrous outcomes in Grayling's ministerial career are the result of his bad leadership.
