@Peston

Very bad reaction from EU 27 to Baker/Morgan Brexit plan C. “Zero chance. Have just discussed over here. Viewed as both extraordinarily funny and tragic. No-one can understand how Nicky M and co would sign off on a proposition which leads so obviously to no-deal”.

The proposal involves paying the £39bn EU divorce bill, redrafting the backstop arrangements over the Irish border, and extending the implementation period until December 2021.
From the Graun. Once again, of course, it comes pre-rejected by all of the EU.

It was quite late yesterday when I saw it, had a shock initially as one of the names attached in the report I saw was Hammond, I'd never heard of Stephen Hammond so assumed it was Philip. :shock:
I thought Nicky Morgan had more sense.

This then leads us to on Cooper-Boles, the amendment which would give Parliament legislative time to delay Brexit for a period if the PM’s renegotiation was not a success. The significance of this amendment is to show that Parliament is prepared to take action to prevent a no-deal Brexit. It cannot guarantee against a no-deal Brexit, for the EU may turn down an extension, but it will show intent

Which is interesting, because the point that the hard-core are making about their plans are that we need to show the EU our firm intent about changing the backstop. It's difficult for them to argue that Cooper-Boles is technically irrelevant when they're proposing exactly the same strategy for their plans. But it won't stop them arguing that.

The impacts of localised council tax support schemes

If nothing else it made me pursue disabled reduction(where it drops to the next band).Contrary to the entitlement culture propaganda we could have got it for some years previously,it was the bespoke dialysis room and coalition increase which "decided"it for me.Being penalised for saving the State,particularly presented as unfair,rankled.There has been further reforms based on this atrocious misrepresentation,of course.

Vast cost saving independent living facillitation should never have to be discretionary,before you get to the pernicious enveloping of UC and consequent conditions to be satisfied predicated on a default position which is irrelevant.We have an awful long way to go.DWP abolishing is only a first step of a long road.

One hopes they're not going to be foolish enough to mess about with the timescale.
I think it's designed so that the period would be amendable.
Would be daft to ask for 3 months imo, bad enough if EU said that was all we could have, no point in volunteering for it.

@PickardJE
Labour source:

“We're backing Cooper amendment to reduce the threat of the chaos of a no deal exit. The Cooper Bill could give MPs a temporary window to agree a deal that can bring the country together.
We will aim to amend the Cooper Bill to shorten possible A50 extension”
12:19 PM · Jan 29, 2019
Will the leadership still support the amendment if the possible extension isn't shortened? It's not clear from this, nor is their reasoning for wanting to shorten it. The obvious reason would be to frustrate attempts at holding a further referendum, which needs the most time, but Labour policy is for a people's vote to remain on the table, so what is the reason? As gilsey says, suspecting the EU wouldn't agree isn't a reason to object to keeping the option open.

Andy MacDonald is on tv now saying putting forward candidates for EU elections would be "anathema" to the British public. If this is Labour's position, then a further referendum really isn't on the table, is it? I can't see how it would be possible to hold a referendum and act on it by June.

What happens with this amendment could prove quite revealing.

The following article makes it sound as though Labour will support Cooper's amendment whether the extension period is shortened or not, which is more encouraging.

The title of the article will give the "can't be seen to be blocking Brexit" obsessives some palpitations, though:

Fairly obvious to me that Labour are saying they will back Cooper's amendment now and that, if passed, it *can* be shortened later.

The multi-part nature of Cooper's plan is a bit confusing. Amendment today is to create the opportunity to pass legislation later? So Labour supporting today but will only support 3 months not 9 months extension if we ever get to that point?
It's still a knock back to referendum hopefuls.

"Brexit deal to be vetoed by EU Parliament if British MPs try to amend it, Guy Verhofstadt says"
The European Parliament will block the withdrawal agreement if British MPs try to amend it, the body’s Brexit chief has warned ahead of a series of key votes in Westminster.
Guy Verhofstadt told The Independent that the EU’s legislature, which has to approve any deal, would not consent to a “watered down” agreement and that the controversial Irish backstop could not be ditched.

They really are going to spend all afternoon and evening talking about a proposal which the commission, the parliament and all of the EU nations individually have already said will be dismissed out of hand.

I know this comment is barely worth making but the whole thing is just astoundingly stupid.

The NHS has said it will cancel blood donation sessions in Dover and Folkestone for two months while Britain exits the EU. Traffic in the Kent area could be brought to a standstill around 29 March by freight lorries which could be subject to more stringent customs checks at Channel crossings. People who had been scheduled to give blood have had their appointments cancelled because of the anticipated disruption, the NHS Blood Service has said.

Surely, if this is passed, we'd be giving the EU what they've been asking for. Up until now, all we've been telling them is what we don't want. With the Brady amendment we'd be saying, "We want something different." How can that not be helpful?
