Three of the state-funded Steiner schools – the Steiner academies in Bristol, Exeter and Frome – have been placed in special measures.
Those are the Free Schools - and those that people like Toby Young doesn't like to mention when he's crowing about how good they all are...

All three are single academy trusts i.e. on their own. This isn't a good model IMO. Who do they turn to if they have issues, and apart from Ofsted, who is reviewing them on a regular basis like LA schools are?

I haven't read this yet, just linking it for the photo, this bus shelter is on the North York Moors, on our route to Whitby. We noticed a while ago that it had acquired some brexit graffiti.

Reading it now. This is very good.
a story many British, and particularly English, people tell themselves about a once independent and impregnable distinct island that has lost its autonomy to a faceless potage of bureaucrats from Babel and how this is a chance to break free. That story did not come from nowhere. From the Falklands war to Fritz, the New Labour bulldog, the entire political class has colluded in its construction. It has now been leveraged by opportunists and is consuming the political class whole.

The problem I have with what I think is what is the article's main assumption - the headline is 'So, poorer Brexiters voted to be worse off? There’s nothing wrong in that' - is that I find it difficult to believe that it's true. I think it's a reasonable generalisation that people voted leave because they believed the leave campaign when they told them that leaving would be easy, new trades deals would be easy, that the EU states needed us more than we needed them, that there were riches to be had in addition from the rest of the world and that we would thrive and be better off after leaving.

It's always been obvious that this is nonsense but a lot of people chose to believe it. Now that it's becoming impossible to refute, we see a change of emphasis to 'it's not just about money you know'. I think this is disingenuous at best.

People voted for what they voted for for their own reasons and I honestly don't have a problem with that - I think - believe, very strongly - that a lot of them were very very wrong but it was still their decision. But show me that the main message back in the campaign was 'vote for this to make yourself poorer'. It might have said 'that isn't true, but even if it was true it would still be worth it' - but that isn't the same.

Morning.

12cm of snow here and still coming down, so it's an official snow day here in North East Somerset.

The kitten is very excited and has been flying in and out the cat flap all morning and has easily outlasted the kids who braved the wind chill for a snowball fight in the garden but are already back in warming up again.

I agree with adam on the main point of the article.

I had/have a theory that the poorer people voting leave* were actually voting to make other people's lives as shit as theirs already were.

Imo immigration was the main thing uniting poor and rich leave voters, and it's fallen down the list of people's priorities since the EUref not because their priorities have changed but because they think the outcome of the vote has dealt with it. 'Sovereignty' comes second. The first utterly misguided and the second ridiculously vague and unrealistic in the modern world.
People were told they could vote for those things with no economic downside.

There was also undoubtedly a "what the hell, how can things get any worse than they are now" mindset for quite a few.

I'd no idea Corbyn and Hardy were such close friends. Reading about the friendship in the middle of the BBC news article reporting Hardy's death moved me. It's not an extraordinary thing, the friendship and Corbyn with him when he passed away.

I'm sorry I'm surprised reading mild mentions of Corbyn and his friends or habits. It doesn't often occur, neutral reporting, even when the proceedings are otherwise unremarkable.
