It's just a shame the things that were being discussed then - WCAs, NHS privatisation, austerity cuts to social security - are still with us and, in some cases, getting worse.

Oh and stuff that were key issues during the 2010 GE, such and banking reform and social care reform, have been completely sidelined and ignored which is quite dispiriting.

Didn't happen during the war (given that a certain type of Brexiteer seems to think they personally won WW2, I thought that worth mentioning)

Consistent practice, habitually coming to this place helps teach me what no money can buy - the strength of friendship, communication, regular engagement. I've known this more or less for the last couple years. I've given it greater thought and must write this now. I must express this now. I'm not a good writer but I know good writing when I read it. I'm finding world events a dark and challenging time socially and politically. The relatively general optimism I felt during the 2015 GE campaign is absent but I don't despair. I'm helped though our participation in this place. The companionship we've built together is good. Living well is possible through cooperative effort. It's a tool in our kit, FlyTheNest*.

*FTN
I'm often confused by acronyms though rarely am I here. I try applying what I've been taught consistently. Write the thing out at least once in the beginning of any communication then use the acronym if it's needed following that. Doing a thing right every time makes it likelier it's done right when it really matters. I make mistakes all the time. I try not repeating the same mistakes. I don't always succeed.

I'll add something more. I sometimes use grammatically incorrect lingo intentionally trying to replicate the way I talk. This contrivance fails more often than succeeds. Thank you for your patience with me. I've lived a lot of different places and picked up accents I spontaneously break into depending on circumstances. My vocal expressions relieve me and sometimes amuse anyone listening.

@citizenJA

Totally agree with you about abbreviations and acronyms. I try to put the full term (together with the short-form in the bloody brackets) at the first time of use in a post, and use the short-form thereafter. Always happy to be picked up on it when I fail to do so!

Exactly so. This is related to my rambling post I've just made above. Government aren't doing right by most people and I sure as hell can't see a way clear making them do so. They've decided to pile problem on top of other problems, accomplishing their goals, not helping most people or country.

I've been giving Tory government strategies some thought. What are they up to? What's their plan for the nation? I think they've looked at the demographics and note the population of the nation can be substantially reduced within a decade or using time and Brexit. Those able to do so will leave for better opportunities elsewhere. Population reduction may help reduce overwhelming dissent of Tory policies. They don't seem to mind industry leaving. I think Tories want their nation made up of independent enclaves more or less resembling the Britain of the late seventeenth and very early eighteenth century.

The government:
“We can’t have a second referendum because there’d be civil unrest”

Also the government:
“Good chance the riots will be so bad next month we’ll have to evacuate the fucking queen”
If I'm not here, then I'll be in the library. Or the other library.

You're a writer I can't presume to praise.

I've adapted that from Mr. Frank Churchill's rhapsodical estimation of Mr. George Knightley during conversation with Miss Emma Woodhouse in Emma.
The Frank and Emma high-five chapter
"Let me return your congratulations.--I assure you that I have heard the news with the warmest interest and satisfaction.--He is a man whom I cannot presume to praise."

My adaptation is grammatically incorrect. It wasn't intentional. <sigh>

Enjoying the reflections on FTN

Of course it's sad that some people don't post here much any more, but I hope many of them will return one day :-)

Though others never will, thinking in particular of the wonderful and I know much missed Lady Centauria.

Is our most prolific poster here still rebeccariots? Was certainly the case fairly recently.

One who was, sadly, driven away by Brexit :(

I was thinking of rebeccariots2 only the other day - I often do when "Brexit" pops up. It would be nice to hear from her again (on "Brexit" or any other subject).

Well our political class have covered themselves in glory this week have they not?

My favourite moment being Labour planning to abstain on a Tory immigration bill in fear of a racist backlash from their own constituents.

Which is as pitiful and sad as Blair pandering to Murdoch.

Corbyn is a fucking clown.

He lost my vote this week and some of my friends are looking at the Lib Dems.

I have tried to warn them.

Mark Francois, earlier, saying that the Government should reveal the details of the assurances it gave to Nissan. First coherent thing I've ever heard him say.

Though clicks on the site are down as a result, meaning a big hit on our advertising revenue. Jobs at FTN could be at risk ;-)
