Statement

https://theindependent.group/statement
Sitting as the Independent Group of MPs we appeal to colleagues from all parties to consider the best interests of the country above short-term party-political considerations and choose to do likewise.
Interesting to see whether they get any from across the floor.

So 7 MPs, one more than the predicted top end number of 6. I think Gavin Shuker is the dark horse?

A party split in British politics feels like a historic moment, but in Italy it's just known as 'Monday'. In the last parliament, 347 MPs changed party, for a grand total of 566 switches. An MP changed party *nine times* in the last term.

No, that is Ann Coffey.

Shuker has been one of the biggest whiners and moaners in the PLP for years.

Coffey was definitely linked to the split rumours, though, so it must be Berger that was unexpected. I know there was speculation about her, but thinking back I don't remember her being specifically linked to those rumoured to be definitely thinking of quitting.

Well, this is an interesting theory...

https://twitter.com/StewartWood/status/ ... 0978717698

But as this seems to make clear there are only 2 ways that a snap election can happen under a FTP.

https://constitution-unit.com/2017/04/1 ... -election/
* either two thirds of all MPs must vote for the election;
* or the government must lose a vote of confidence and fourteen days must pass without the successful creation of a new government.
I guess the 7 might find out how popular their stand is with their local electorate sooner than they thought - unless the idea was to force one, and when (or if) Corbyn loses, have him resign.

It was reported this morning that the "plan" was that none of the defecting MPs would stand in their present seats next time.

(but in "target constituencies" - wherever they might be - instead)

The Honda announcement wouldn't exactly make for the best backdrop against which Theresa May would be going to the country asking for a vote of confidence in her handling of Brexit. A snap election would be a risky punt, not really her style.

Mr citizen has come home and I'm so happy to see him. I looked for government and found nothing of substance.
I'm in agreement with HindleA's sentiments regarding Labour's current affairs. I'm searching for reasonable meaning, responsible action and coming up with little. Perhaps they've decided to sacrifice themselves, splitting the Tory vote and not Labour's. It could happen.
If I voted Labour, I'd expect the Labour elected MP to stay Labour unless they've disgraced themselves and need to leave the party.
I'm going to read a book now. I love you all.
Goodnight.

But that is not going to be the outcome of this is it?

The outcome is a destroyed Labour Party - the last gift of the failed politics of the left that we have seen across Europe. What will step into he breach will probably be less edifying and we may be thankful for FPTP in the future when the consequences of Brexit hit.

These consequences will be marked as the consequence of today and the reported reaction of the PLP is going to be, at best, May's deal but more worryingly a Tory led trade negotiation that cannot bring anything positive at the end of it because ideologically they are hard right.

All Labour's work in trying to look for an alternative to a Tory Brexit is now (probably) in tatters and all that difficult tightrope working will come to nothing.

A sad day, I consider myself fortunate to live abroad and be slightly sheltered from the fallout but it gives me no pleasure to say that.

I will be interested to read books in the future about the machinations of the PLP in the future, certain MPs and their motivation.

In all this we have a report today about the referendum campaigns and the dark politics that went on. Hardly mentioned and focus on the egos of seven rather underachieving (to be kind) MPs. I don't think that Brexit is really that much on their list of concerns

Lots of stories about more people lined up to join Shit Club 7 but no names yet.

I can't imagine why May would call an election, unless it was a sneaky device to enable her to run away. At the moment she is at least (from her and the ERG's perspective) in charge. You could end up with some kind of short term coalition settling something like Labour's proposals after a general election. I repeat myself, but last time she had a massive poll lead, had just won, as government, an opposition seat in a by election that hadn't happened for a generation or two, and genuinely seemed poised to win a big majority. This time she's the appalling campaigner who came close to throwing it all away two years ago against an opposition who were much much more popular than anybody ahd believed they could be. She's got three more years - why risk it?
