Dear God. Much being made on the news of how complicated the voting system for this evening is. It really isn't.

Theresa May’s pledge to Tory MPs to stand down if they vote for her deal shows once and for all that her chaotic Brexit negotiations have been about party management, not principles or the public interest. A change of government can't be a Tory stitch-up, the people must decide.

A consequence of May's likely resignation is that the unresolved question of Britain's future relations with Europe, to be negotiated in phase 2 of talks, will largely be decided on hustings in a Tory Party leadership contest. Fewer than 120,000 deciding on behalf of 46m.

So ... if it squeaks through - if it even gets held - we will be launched into two more years of 'they need us more than we need them, they'll blink, we'll get all of the benefits of being in the single market without the costs, no free movement of labour, business will force their hand' and then we'll end up without a trade deal, which will make leaving without a withdrawal agreement look like a walk in the park.

How can May's withdrawal agreement come before the House a third time? Bercow won't allow it, he made that clearer today.

That’s it then. If DUP genuinely won’t abstain then ERG has to pivot back to opposing, final chance of May’s deal passing is dead, and we’re on for an election. Which Corbyn will probably win.

Assuming that May's deal gets voted down a third (and hopefully final) time on Friday, that gives MPs time to come up with something.

I don't think the indicative vote was expected to find a winner today, they're having another go on Monday.

That went a lot better than I expected for a people's vote, quite delighted actually.
Loved all the Tory braying until it was pointed out to them it did better than May's deal.
Quite surprised the Norway option crashed and burned as it did though, and it seems Labour's nonsense has finally been put out of its misery.

Thanks. I think I've said this here before - never been a fan of Dennis Skinner, sartorial elegance aside. I guessed that it would be him and Kate Hoey - but didn't guess Ronnie Campbell.
As an aside - Margaret Beckett can certainly rise to the occasional occasion!

Re: Wednesday 27th March 2019
So where are we at now?
May's deal stands no chance. She's thrown all her shit at the wall today, including her wretched self, and still the DUP say no because they have a fundamental problem with the backstop that can never be resolved, so it's finished unless a significant number of Labour MPs vote for it. Last time she got 3.
Labour's nonsense has been defenestrated unless they win a general election.
A Norway deal is dead.
So we're left with 3 possible outcomes it seems to me.
A run off between a second referendum and a customs union or no deal.
And in that situation I'm afraid to say a customs union would probably beat a second referendum but it would be better than being kicked out on our arses with nothing.
Of course there's always the distinct and, dare I say likely, possibility that I'm utterly wrong.
One thing I am sure of however is that it's been a delight watching the vociferous and somewhat uncivil backlash being faced by Jacob Rees-Mogg and now Boris Johnson on Twitter and in the Daily Mail by their now somewhat disgruntled disciples. I wonder who could have encouraged such boorish and crass behaviour?

Re: Wednesday 27th March 2019
The theory is they can split the withdrawal agreement from the political decleration and just vote on the former which would make it a new vote, sidestep Bercow and satisfy the EU's deadline. The problem being that would make it even less likely the Labour MPs they need to vote for it would do so as now that May has promised to resign if it passes that would leave the rest of the process in the hands of her successor. Any Labour MP who is seen to be handing the future of this country to the likes of Boris Johnson would be vilified until the universe experienced heat death. And with the DUP voting against that will also preclude half the ERG including Rees-Mogg unless he wishes to humiliate himself even further.citizenJA wrote:How can May's withdrawal agreement come before the House a third time? So regardless of whatever shenanigans they attempt it aint gonna work.

Ok now I've got people emailing me whose intelligence I would normally respect angrily berating MPs for not coming to a solution in a day. What is it about this indicitave vote process that is difficult to understand? And these are Remain voters. Aren't they supposed to be the smart ones?

Re: Wednesday 27th March 2019
Theresa May is currently Schrödinger's Prime Minister.
She's dead if her deal passes but alive if it doesn't and the only people able to open the box and collapse the wavefunction are the DUP who don't believe in the laws of physics.
Quite an awkward superposition to be in.

her government too - the DUP say that if the deal pass they withdraw their support and the government lose their majority... if it fails they're fine to continue with C&S
