Dominic Grieve deselection campaign being led by someone who not only stood against him as Ukip candidate in GE 2017, was a UKIP local council candidate and local branch chairman of Ukip, but also stood for the UKIP National Executive Council in 2016... now a Conservative.

Sky mentioned Newsnight last night, in the context of Rory Stewart being lobotomised by becoming an MP. Put me in mind of Sayeeda Warsi who never said anything of note while party chair but now something of a star, by tory standards.

Anyway, George Freeman and Stella Creasy were in the studio at the same time, both Stewart and Creasy were talking about a long delay and EP elections, good to hear. Freeman was all for cobbling something together with the indicative votes next week, imo if that happened it would unravel again in short order.

Later they had a panel discussion with Ayesha Hazarika, Nina Schick and two rightwing headbangers, Claire Fox and Toady Young. Newsnight's idea of a broad spectrum of opinion. Ten minutes with Nina Schick would have been far more illuminating, there's a woman who knows what she's talking about. Also would have given us more time to admire her astonishing glamour.

Dominic Grieve is deselected because of his beliefs in campaign led by his ex UKIP opponent. The Tory leadership can stop any deselection if it wants - we frequently did. CCHQ should suspend the local party. Otherwise we are heading for a huge, historic split in the Tory Party

I'm not sure I can bring myself to read this.

Delusion levels are off the scale. Which bit about having to the end of last week to pass the deal does May not understand? We can ask for a long extension or leave without a deal. Those are now our choices. Apologies to Sky'sGoneOut for ruining their upbeat mood yesterday, but we have a PM who is not showing any signs of being willing to ask for the lengthy extension that is now necessary to avoid crashing out and a parliament that is showing no signs of forcing revocation instead.

The Commons could coalesce around a customs union, but have no way of forcing May to agree it with the EU or they could coalesce around a confirmatory referendum, but have no way to force her to ask for a lengthy extension. When parliament voted to trigger article 50 they knowingly put us in a position where we would leave the EU with no deal if we failed to agree one and they knowingly agreed to May to pursue a deal which took us out of the single market and customs union. And she actually managed to agree a deal along those lines. Parliament agreed a process they didn't agree to in order to achieve an end they didn't want and once they passed the Withdrawal Act they lost the only real leverage they had to force a change of direction. On a day when some on the left are saying kind words about Dominic Grieve, I would remind them it was his cowardice last summer that has left us in this mess. He and the other Tory moderates needed to make their objections felt back then. Now, whatever the outcome, is way too late, an awful lot of damage has already been done.

I am told that the cabinet secretary Mark Sedwill and the attorney general Geoffrey Cox informed Cabinet that if at the end of the Letwin process MPs pass a motion mandating the PM to pursue a new route through the Brexit mess – perhaps a referendum, or membership of the customs union, or some other softer future relationship with the EU – the PM and government would be in breach of the ministerial code and the law if they fail to follow MP’s instructions.
Or to put it another way, the PM would be obliged to endeavour to negotiate with the EU the revealed will of MPs, even if that revealed will involved a Brexit delay that requires the UK to participate in May’s European parliamentary elections, or is at odds with the Tories’ manifesto.
So the impression created by the PM that she could ignore the results of the indicative votes process is not true – or so ministers who attended Cabinet tell me.
And although the prime minister has said she would not negotiate a Brexit delay that obliges the UK to participate in those elections to the European Parliament, she would not have a choice – unless she quits.

I'm no wiser after reading the Peston article linked but it's interesting as hell. The date on that is 26 March 2019 (Tuesday).

They had a chance to effectively do that last week with the Beckett amendment, it narrowly failed. Maybe another attempt in the coming days might succeed?

Tom Watson says a new referendum is the "only way" to reunite the country - but to my mind there is no realistic way to do so at this stage.
A combination of poor education, wilful ignorance, rabid hatred, a handful of powerful people who stand to gain from the chaos, 2000 years of believing the aristocrats and their bastard offspring know better than the rest of us, etc etc and the country is ****ed. Basically.

The silver lining can be the splitting of both Labour and Tories and pressure to get PR. Then we might, at some point, start settling down into a serious country again.
