The indicative votes then are not the Brexit battle that is billed. The fundamental underlying questions are whether we first align our rules with the US or the EU, and how long we take to make those decisions.

Tories latest line is really pathetic, breaching commitments in their manifesto indeed.
The one that was cobbled together in a week with no consultation, almost all of the rest of it was ditched, and it cost them their majority.
You think you've seen them scrape the bottom of the barrel but they always seem to be able to go lower.

Also at an advanced stage in the discussions is the idea of a “Festival of Britain” – although the Democratic Unionist party has initially said no, arguing it must be called the “Festival of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”

Although it has it's moments.

I've never stockpiled stuff before but, with two children with Type 1 Diabetes, we have been this time, although we did it in a pretty organised way, buying more of things with long dates that we buy anyway, as well as stocking up on insulin and peripherals - needles for pens, lancets for testing devices, different strips to test, emergency hypostop stuff and glucogen... . It does mean that we shouldn't need to buy flour, pasta, rice... quite a long list - for quite a while once we actually know what's happening.

I can envisage big ructions if there should be a second referendum and the rules are different (as they surely need to be) to the first one - ie if it's not the rubbish set-up used by David Cameron.

MPs are now debating the business motion for the indicative votes process.

Andrea Leadsom, the leader of the Commons, told MPs that the government would be voting against it, because it was opposed in principle to the idea of the government having to cede control of the Commons business.

Nothing more certain to cause shortages than widespread panic stockpiling ,fine for the people that can,not so hot for others.People are blaming Brexit for totally unrelated decisions.A general not specific observation/comment,clarification and not to be taken as such.

I read somewhere it had been tweaked in an attempt to get the DUP on board, but I'm not sure what specifically has been changed. If the SNP vote for it this time, it could pass.

Exactly, that's what burns me. It's the Tory party's interests and not the best interests of people piloting current events. The whole thing was wholly avoidable; it still is.

HMP Birmingham: G4S loses permanent contract

A crisis-hit prison is being taken back into public ownership after the private company running it had its contract terminated.

Security firm G4S was awarded a 15-year contract to run HMP Birmingham in 2011.

In August 2018, Peter Clarke, the chief inspector of prisons, said the jail had fallen into a "state of crisis" and was the worst he had come across.

The Prison Service took it over, initially for six months, in August and will now run it permanently.

The British army is on course to miss its targets for the number of recruits it should have by 2020. The army’s 2020 strategy, published in 2015, aimed to have 82,000 army personnel and 30,100 reserves by March 2019. According to MoD statistics, the army only had 79,790 trained personnel in October 2018, and 26,960 trained reserves.

In 2012, the MoD signed a decade-long contract with the outsourcing company Capita to manage recruitment to the armed forces. The National Audit Office found in December that Capita had consistently missed the army’s targets, with the shortfall ranging from 21% to 45% each year.

Starmer says Labour will not be backing Cherry’s amendment. Joanna Cherry intervenes to ask what Starmer what Labour’s working-class voters will think if the UK crashed out with a no-deal Brexit because Labour did not back her amendment.

Why?

Labour have been demanding May takes no deal off the table but is unwilling themselves to support a motion that seeks to do just that.

I haven't heard any kind of reason why Labour won't support this, let alone a credible one.

The argument seems to be (and I'm not sure I agree though I can see it) that the indicative votes are about what we want not we don't want.

Cherry's plan might better come forward as an amendment to one or more of the solutions.
