Speaker is sadly now openly siding with a House of Commons which never really accepted the verdict of 17.4 people. It is clear that when the Leave vote won the Remain campaign only really started.

Another hour, or thereabouts, before the outcome\s.
Re: Monday 1st April 2019
In addition to the squirrels, my computer went funny today. The clock went forward 2 hours, for some reason. I gather it's a fairly widespread glitch. I got someone to sort it out for me, but then my cursor went missing. Turned it off and turned it on again, and it seems ok now. Touch wood.

Result now expected at around 10pm, I'm hearing.

And they really were. At least one of them. Sorry for having a song for every occasion. I can't help it. You may have gathered that by now.
Re: Monday 1st April 2019
Detailed headcounts here - I think TIG and the Lib Dems have delivered, at the very best if we're lucky, the WA and PD as it stands with a harder right new PM to take it forward.
Edited to add - although I confidently expect to hear from them that it's all the labour party's fault, and labour numbers would have made the difference in CMii and CU and CPV but only because people voted against the whip (and most voted against CMii which was the whipped vote, I think) or against the looser party line.

Re: Monday 1st April 2019
Because the lunatic tories now have a legitimate argument that the commons don't have anything positive to put forward and May now has an argument that as the WA is the only possible deal it should be that or no deal.citizenJA wrote:How?adam wrote:Detailed headcounts here - I think TIG and the Lib Dems have delivered, at the very best if we're lucky, the WA and PD as it stands with a harder right new PM to take it forward.
ETA - as the lunatic tories have said now, the only 'deal' the commons has passed is the one asking for somebody else to come up with a different plan for the Irish border. So we should go ahead with that one. I would imagine they will be pressing that argument again now - it's no backstop or no deal.

Re: Monday 1st April 2019
I looked at the Clarke vote. Basically only Labour and Tories voted for it.
Re: Monday 1st April 2019
And, following on from that, the issue isn't that the WA is an abomination because it isn't (although it's clearly bollocks as it stands because of the NI situation but it's only clearly bollocks because any way forward would be clearly bollocks), it's that this will now get us out one way or another without any really telling pressure upon the government to go forward looking for a closer association. We'll leave, and whoever it is further to the right who takes over from May will lead us to a minimal trade deal.

Thank you. I tried deleting my question after clearing my head and thinking on it a minute. I understand the reason for gloom. Is there no hope for better?adam wrote:Because the lunatic tories now have a legitimate argument that the commons don't have anything positive to put forward and May now has an argument that as the WA is the only possible deal it should be that or no deal.citizenJA wrote:How?adam wrote:Detailed headcounts here - I think TIG and the Lib Dems have delivered, at the very best if we're lucky, the WA and PD as it stands with a harder right new PM to take it forward.
Re: Monday 1st April 2019
Whilst I would have no real expectation of this, this was obviously also the moment for those in the cabinet who had been ordered not to vote at all to say fuck this and vote as they chose. And of course they didn't.

Re: Monday 1st April 2019
I appreciate that I might be 'reacting in the moment' a bit here but I honestly can't see a better way forward. Although if May now forces her deal through she is very likely to lose the DUP's C&S arrangement, and possibly a few more of her less right colleagues, and I would guess that we are a little more likely to have an election.
Although I suspect whoever takes over from her will say to the DUP and the EU 'sod the backstop' and just see what happens.

Conservatives voted seven to one against both customs union and Norway Plus. Neither got to 40 Tory votes. Unless someone shifts, there is no compromise that can pass parliament that a Conservative prime minister can deliver.

Been out celebrating my unlikely survival for another year on this benighted globe, had a lovely Afghani chicken curry, some some splendid real ales, some fine company, then I get back to find everything in the real world is still shit.
Splendid.

The House of Commons again votes against all options. A hard #Brexit becomes nearly inevitable. On Wednesday, the U.K. has a last chance to break the deadlock or face the abyss. (Politics Live, Guardian)
