Brexit Meme of the morning is
Disgraced MP Fiona Onasanya voted for bill to delay Brexit which passed by majority of one
Tory Chris Davies, who has just pleaded guilty to fraud and will be sentenced shortly, of course voted against Cooper-Letwin.

I wonder what it is about former Labour, female, black Onasanya that merits particular attention?

It's going to be a long day in the House of Lords - 7 amendments to business motion, 2nd reading not expected to start until early evening, filibuster attempts, lots of sound and fury and possible 2/3am finish.

In the end, sources pretty confident Cooper bill will get through.

Supporters of Cooper bill in Lords win first victory, with majority of 121

In the Lords the closure motion has passed by 239 votes to 118 - a majority of 121.

That means peers are now winding up this debate - a procedural one relating to the fast-tracked timetable for the Cooper bill.

Although this was not technically a vote on the bill, the numbers probably roughly reflect the number of peers in favour and against the bill. In other words, the opponents of the bill are outnumber two to one. (Politics Live, Guardian)

As the post above yours reminds us, come next week there would have been another MP and so her vote wouldn't be "pivotal" either way.

I have no doubt that we'd be told that as Newport voted leave we should take the absent MP as another vote against.

Francois comes across as a ridiculous character in that as indeed we know he is.
First up, Francois, who between 1983 and 1989 was a part-time officer in the Territorial Army, and since then has relied heavily on military terms in everyday conversation. (In the early 1990s he named his campaign to get elected as councillor “Operation Basildon Storm”). Since entering government in 2010 he has been given various minor roles mostly involving the army, much to the alleged irritation of the soldiers who dealt with him, before being summarily demoted by Theresa May in 2016.

Ken Baker is talking about Mill and 'the tyranny of the majority' in the Lords in frustration at being in the minority and in aid of forcing through the tyranny of the majority from the referendum.

Not the Ken Baker that was a minister in the Thatcher era that forced through large scale changes because of their large majority?

Surely not!

Shocked etc.

Leaked emails show infiltration fears before attempt to oust Grieve

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... dence-vote
In a single small town in the constituency, seven people, including a man who had been canvassed as a Ukip voter, tried to join the party in the space of 48 hours, leading to infiltration concerns. One email noted it could not be a “fluke”.

Grieve accused Jon Conway, a former Ukip candidate who stood against him in the general election before joining the Tories, of orchestrating an insurgency plot to unseat him.

Conway, an ex-Vote Leave regional organiser, denied he was behind any campaign against Grieve, but another leaked email seen by the Guardian reveals he boasted of forming a 100-strong “breakaway group” of members to “bring down” Grieve.
Bit awkward...

This is a minor victory for the Brexiter filibuster: The Yvette Cooper bill, which would require the PM to request an article 50 extension and avoid a no-deal Brexit, will remain with the Lords until Monday.

Its supporters had wanted to see it fast-tracked through the upper chamber, so that it could become law by the end of today.

As the Labour party notes, however, it will be sent back to the Commons in a “timely fashion”, meaning the delay could yet turn out to have little material affect on the outcome. (Politics Live, Guardian)

So what was the Tory line on the NHS "Put the medics in charge! Down with bureaucrats!?

Right, so what happened here then?

Oxford hospital trust faced defamation threat from NHS

https://www.theguardian.com/society/201 ... ion-threat
In an extraordinary move NHS England tried to stop Oxford University hospitals (OUH) NHS trust opposing its controversial decision to let a private firm take charge of cancer scanning.

Lawyers for NHS England said the trust’s concerns, which were shared by doctors, MPs of all parties and cancer patients, amounted to defamation. The view was in a legal letter the NHS sent to OUH, which was seen by the Guardian.

NHS England’s solicitors, DAC Beachcroft, issued the warning last August. It came when relations between the body that runs England’s health service and the Oxford trust had become very strained over the former’s decision to take the contract for PET-CT scanning services away from OUH and hand it to InHealth.
....
The Guardian can also reveal that OUH’s chief executive, Bruno Holthof, was left shaken after the NHS England chairman at the time, Sir Malcolm Grant, rang him to warn the trust not to mount a legal challenge to the switch to a contract with InHealth, despite the Churchill’s international reputation for providing cancer care.
Yes, that's the Malcolm Grant who is a barrister and academic lawyer with no health qualifications whatsoever.
