Much also riding on PM’s performance. She’ll make a presentation to EU leaders at start of summit. They then quiz her (on cross-party talks with Corbyn etc). Only when she leaves the room - and influenced by the impression she has made- EU leaders will then debate extension

Re: Wednesday 10th April 2019
This reminds me of something not exactly related but I want to share my thoughts. I acknowledge warm diplomatic greetings are a convention including embraces and continental kisses between people. Having said that, yesterday's images of May in almost romantic embraces with other European leaders, gazing into each others eyes bothered me. Images of it dominated news. The theatrical display seems cynically manipulative. Again, I understand it's conventional and normally it doesn't bother me. Even if I dislike one or both of the players performing this ritual, I don't get flustered about it. Her and her government are playing with lives. May is consistently a right nasty piece of work in my opinion and I don't trust her. Her deliberate rudeness towards almost everyone is a choice she's made. She's not going to materially suffer from her inflexibility. She'll not go without in any case.gilsey wrote:What could possibly go wrong?katya adler

Unsurprisingly, Corbyn used it to essentially launch the Locals campaign.
Schools, police, homelessness, cuts to council budgets.
Quite right too.

From the G, AS not there till later.
Corbyn’s line of attack was comfortable ground for a Labour leader, but his questions were consistent and coherent, and his final peroration rousing:
The evidence is clear; the Tories have abandoned communities across the country, they’ve left towns and cities to fend for themselves after nine years of vindictive, damaging austerity... This government stands for tax cuts for the richest and swingeing cuts for the rest. Will the prime minister now admit that far from tackling the burning injustices she talked about, her government’s cruel and unfair policies have pushed councils to the brink and left those just about managing not being able to manage at all? That is her legacy.

Is it too much to hope that the penny has dropped for at least a few of them - it is better for May to be questioned about Brexit from "her own" side?PaulfromYorkshire wrote:Seemed quieter than usual on my Twitter feed. Family's anger as government's social care plans delayed for fifth time
Sky News understands the government has no clear timescale, with Brexit understood to be a significant factor* in the delay.

Academic Sir Roger Scruton sacked from housing role
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-47880669
Conservative academic Sir Roger Scruton has been sacked as head of a government housing body following critical comments about Islam and China.
The philosopher's appointment to head the Building Beautiful Commission in November was criticised at the time.
He has now been dismissed after claiming Islamophobia was "a propaganda word" and "each Chinese person is a kind of replica of the next one".
The Ministry of Housing said the remarks were "unacceptable".
He always was a reactionary old bore.

I see La Truss has decided to throw a squirrel in so that the tedious right wingers can try and forget Brexit...
Oh, and this from 2012...
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politi ... dbyes.html
So I googled it as I was fairly sure that this had been announced before...and found consultations to this in 2015 and 2016 and an announcement of a crackdown in 2017...Liz Truss

Today I'm announcing the end to six-figure "golden goodbyes" for senior public sector workers. They have cost the taxpayer almost £200m per year.

The Taoiseach (Irish prime minister), Leo Varadkar, has suggested that the UK would be able to have a say in trade deals if it forms a customs union with the EU.

Apparently most EU member states are OK with us having a lengthy A50 extension, the exception seems to be (guess who) Macron in France.
