Went to see John Vidal speak last night (hasn't it got busy around here) and he was kind of okay - interesting about some bad things (big report out at the weekend telling us how very very much worse current levels of extinction appears to be than we had thought) although he was also a bit of a middle class idiot. Taking a meeting of people who turned out to listen about climate catastrophe and asking 'how many would be willing to fly less' and then, at a push, 'how many would be prepared to stop flying' without considering to ask 'how many simply don't fly' (and the same with driving, for that matter) is just ridiculous.

Morning all.

On that Twitter someone alerted me to the fact that JRM has written a book about The Victorians. So I checked to see who Amazon think are the appropriate ones to stick up as who have reviewed it...
"A full-throated, clear-sighted, well-researched and extremely well written exposition of the Victorians and their values. Rees-Mogg’s choice of a dozen Victorian luminaries allows him to defend an era too often ignored or written off in British history, and to compare it to our modern day in a way that readers will find gripping but also chastening" (Andrew Roberts, bestselling author of ‘Churchill: Walking with Destiny’)

"A fine philosophical mind" (Matthew Parris)

"One of the most important politicians in the country" (Economist)

"Polite, eloquent, witty, well-informed, coherent, principled ― Jacob Rees-Mogg is the antithesis of almost every-thing the Labour party stands for under its current populist leadership" (James Delingpole)

"The best-dressed man in the House of Commons" (Spectator)
:D

So 3/5 don't actually talk about the book and one of the others is that well-known level-headed intellectual...er...James Delingpole.

I'll pass I think...

The Speaker has granted two UQ - one on Failing Grayling's latest...and this.
Labour Whips

@labourwhips
UQ granted at 1030 to @tom_watson to ask @theresa_may if she will make a statement on the findings of the inquiry into the National Security Committee leak.
I think at least one person will be listening with keen interest...

I had Gavin Williamson pegged as the leaker - although I thought that someone less high profile would have to take the blame. I'm now suspicious about the alacrity with which Theresa May got rid of him, the shredding of his character, and the wish for the "closing down" of the issue. Whether or not he's "guilty", it's all a bit odd.

Labour had a teller at our polling station. Not taking any chances with voter apathy!

Also had a Parish council vote to whittle 18 down to 17. I just voted for a couple of people I knew. A reminder why we have the party system. It does help you choose between a bunch of complete strangers, without it you're just stabhing in the dark. Having said that, I do think Parish level works better without party politics. It's unpaid and generally only attracts those genuinely interested in the local community (and who's building an extension ;) )

The deed is done. Voted Green for the first time ever. Couldn't face having my vote used as an endorsement of Labour's duplicitous antics and the Lib-Dems still reek of the stinking bed they shared with the Tories.

Won't make much difference though, Labour will win here by a mile.

The Representation of the People (England and Wales) (Description of Electoral Registers and Amendment) Regulations 2013
There are two registers. Why?
Using information received from the public, registration officers keep two registers – the electoral register and the open register (also known as the edited register). The electoral register lists the names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote in public elections. The register is used for electoral purposes...and for other limited purposes specified in law. The open register is an extract of the electoral register.... It can be bought by any person, company or organisation. Your name and address will be included in the open register unless you ask for them to be removed.
Default option disclosing everyone's personal information and making people opt out of it is careless. It doesn't much matter anyway. Having read the list of who can access the electoral register, I'm unconvinced here's an effective difference between the registers. How many people with the right to vote aren't on the electoral register because they're reluctant having information made public? I've posted about this issue before now. I remain concerned.

What is the purpose of making citizens' personal information available from having registered to vote to anyone other than democratically accountable sources? What's the legitimate justification for businesses and advertisers getting a hold of that data?

Investigation into the government’s land disposal strategy and programmes
There is insufficient data to say with certainty on a government level where the sale proceeds have been spent. It would be a concern if departments are selling land and property to support day to day running costs, rather than to invest in refurbishing existing assets or purchasing new ones. The government has not collected aggregate data on how government as a whole has used proceeds from disposals, so the NAO cannot say whether this is the case.
