Laws should have to pass 'compassion threshold', say MPs

Screw compassion. There was supposed to be a "family test",that worked out well.

Many people advocate State sanctioning of eliminating people in certain circumstances on "compassionate grounds".It's nonsense.

UBI is just money. People need food, warmth and shelter. Money doesn't necessarily buy these things. The same amount of money in different parts of the country won't necessarily buy you the same amount of these things. The value of money can be rapidly eroded by inflation. Not to mention the fact that people with lots of money are very good at extracting money from those that dont have lots of money. I agree that investment in services is a better way to help the least well off. This is reflected in the way left wing parties tend to invest in services and right wing parties tend to de-invest in them, emphasising the money in people's pockets whilst ignoring the fact that the money in a poor person's pocket tends to buy less of the same things as the same amount of money in a wealthy person's pocket (think pre-paid meters). We don't need new answers, we need to property implement the answers we already have. Council houses, secure tenancies, national health service, disability benefits, child benefits, pensioner benefits, jobs centres with actual jobs, properly funded local government, properly funded public transport, wealth taxes, corporate taxes....

‘Cleansed by cuts’: schools refuse places to special needs pupils
Parents are legally obliged to send their children to school yet authorities do not seem to be equally legally obliged to provide adequate and appropriate school places to which they can send them.

The court case quoted in this article looks set to challenge this mismatch by taking the government to judicial review on their underfunding of special needs education. It will be interesting to see how it turns out, but it's already too late for many children whose needs aren't being met in the mainstream school environment.

Myself and AH have long differed on the feasibility of UBI in principle.

I am inclined to accept that introducing it in our present state of (lack of) governance would be rather a risk though.

The Press Association has just snapped this.

European parliament elections will go ahead in the UK on May 23, after the government determined that there is not enough time left to complete the ratification of Brexit before that date, Cabinet Office minister David Lidington has said.

"If cash payments are allowed to take precedence, there’s a serious risk of crowding out efforts to build collaborative, sustainable services and infrastructure – and setting a pattern for future development that promotes commodification rather than emancipation.” This may help to explain why UBI has attracted support from Silicon Valley tycoons, who are more interested in defending consumer capitalism than in tackling poverty and inequality."

Just had a Brexit Party leaflet through the door. Doesn't actually tell me who my local candidate it (it does have the 'lovely' Claire Fox on it though).

Also doesn't have any policies, or any suggestions on how to enact Brexit.

Disingenuous Tory minister Jeremy Hunt has one message
link another political party with his own
A commentator below the line quoted Hunt
"the message of last week was that voters for both main parties are very, very angry about the fact that Brexit hasn’t been delivered."
only referring to the Tory minister by his first name
I'll never forgive or forget the lying media performances

You can see why Spiked are a perfect fit for the Brexit Party. Endless chuntering that things are wrong but bugger all about what to do.

Change UK have changed their name again... their twitter handle was @TheIndGroup until an hour ago when it inexplicably became @ForChange_Now... which is somehow even more confusing and less catchy, and also means they've lost their blue tick

Oh dear... Change UK didn't keep hold of the old handle when they changed it just now, and @TheIndGroup has been re-registered by someone else to read "Hard Brexit" https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D5-XFNbWkAAaUjN.png" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Britain’s democratic blind spot
The British like to think of themselves as an honest bunch, but what has happened in British politics since 2015 is the very opposite of honest. But the British cannot accept they have a problem of political corruption.
