Morning.

I'm still reeling a little from the fact that the Tories have gotten away with removing the link between housing benefit and the actual cost of housing. Mind you, when they severed the link between benefits and the cost of living more generally that didn't generate much comment either and I never really got over the shock of that either, the casualness of how benefits that are supposed to provide the bare minimum to survive could be allowed to drop below the bare minimum without any kind of real debate or understanding by the general public of the enormity of what had happened - that the safety net we all trust to and pay into via NI was no longer going to be there, that the government was no longer prepared to ensure everyone had enough to live on.

Emergency services radio system '£3.1bn over budget'

A replacement for how Britain's emergency services communicate is set to go over budget by at least £3.1bn, a spending watchdog has warned.

The Home Office has already delayed switching off the existing system by three years to 2022.

But the National Audit Office (NAO) has raised doubts about whether the project will be ready by then. (BBC News website)
Another Theresa May project, I believe.

Still astounded by that ChUK statement yesterday - basically "we aren't standing in Peterborough because Labour are going to try and win it, this is terribly UNFAIR" :D

Sky's review of QT last night was, if anything like accurate, pretty depressing.

This might put things into perspective.

Unless urgent action is taken on this and biodiversity and climate change then Brexit will be a footnote in the history books (if there is anyone left to write them).

And now an MEP for the ChUKs (they have a few through defections) has gone on the record urging people to vote........LibDem

EDIT: the ChUK response has apparently been to deny that they are a ChUKer at all, even though they went on record as being a supporter.

True through the looking glass stuff.

Interesting how the EU elections are starting to shape up. With Farage making the running it's actually an extraordinary opportunity for Corbyn, who is obv the polar opposite.

Hope he doesn't fluff it.

10 English NHS hospital trusts overspend by £850m

Experts say hospitals cannot keep to budgets because of underfunding and demand
(Guardian)
Amateurs, compared to Theresa May and Chris Grayling. Where's the waste (and, hence, the value for money)?

Yes, exactly. Our healthcare service isn't a frippery. There are resources enough to fund it properly.

"demand" posited as a problem, rather than welcome opportunity;therein lies the continual misaddressing.

Well, we know from past experience that the underdog role can suit him.

Two local council byelections yesterday:

Havering - Residents Association hold with over two thirds of the vote in a ward where the RA candidates have safely returned three councillors in all elections from 2002 onwards; even on the same day as their GE success in 2010 the Tories were barely able to manage half as many votes in the runners up position, and since then things have become even more one sided. Taking a very distant second place this time were the Greens with around 9%, a modest increase on the last few polls - thus overtaking the Tories who lost well over half the 20% they scored last year. Labour next with 6%, down slightly on a year ago but little changed on 2014, just ahead of UKIP who were marginally up on last time but still a long way short of their second place in 2014. LibDems stood here for the first time this millennium, but had to be content with 3%.

East Lothian - Tory hold with 35% of first preferences, a six point increase on 2017 when in the first election following boundary changes this division split 2Lab/1C/1Nat. SNP came second with a modest increase to nearly 30% (and made it closer following transfers) whilst Labour who had topped the poll with a third of the vote two years ago had a double figure drop - another poor result in Scotland recently. LibDems - who held a seat here in the predecessor division at the original 2007 STV elections - had a 5 point increase to 12% this time. UKIP last with less than 2% - their standard showing north of the border even in better times for them.

Nothing next week, but a couple of contests (one the first of a few deferred polls from last week) on Euro election day.
