"unless society does much more to challenge disablism and learns to view persons with learning disabilities not primarily as people who can’t, defined by their limitations, but rather as people who like all of us have a rainbow of qualities, weaknesses and strengths. It is the deep-seated belief that people with disabilities are inferior and the associated disdain in which society holds them, that are at the root of both daily microaggressions and instances of horrendous abuse"

lasting change will only come if people with learning disabilities lead the charge against the daily undermining of their equal status and rights. Change will only come if they lead the fight to be treated as equal and valued citizens, knowing that they can call on support from those without learning disabilities but ultimately controlling what that support looks like. It will only come, when societies accept that many of their members, for a host of reasons, learning disability or not, may need support and adjustments to the way things are usually done in order to contribute to their communities and achieve their full potential, and that this may well cost a lot of money. It will only come, when both we, as individual citizens and tax payers, and successive governments accept that the costs of offering high-quality support to persons with learning disabilities and their families, even when such support goes way beyond cost-free or low-cost reasonable adjustments, are part and parcel of what it truly means to be a civilised and equal society.

Well, I've just voted in the EU elections.....and it was busy. Busy how, I can't say. When it was busy for the referendum it was people who don't normally vote turning out to vote leave. When it's been busy in the past it's been pensioners turning out to vote Conservative. Today's busy had neither vibe about it, more of a mixed bag. So we'll see.

I must admit, inspired by Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion, a big part of me was very drawn to voting Green. Except I don't want to not vote for Labour either. Claire Moody has been an excellent MEP and deserves to be re-elected. If I could vote for more than one party I would love to add my voice to the Green revolution, though. Dinosaurs in Corbyn's circle still going on about re-opening coal mines is one of the many things about Labour's current leader that irritates me. Knowing it's never going to happen doesn't undo the overall impression of having one foot stuck in the past. Labour needs to be much more forward facing if it isn't to lose touch with a younger generation looking for climate change answers for an uncertain future rather than old socialist answers for an industrial past.

Wonder how many people will think "They won't be there for very long, so why should I bother voting?"

Good morfternoon.
Britons have started voting in the European elections. The polling stations opened about two hours ago and, as usual, they will stay open until 10pm. But, because most other EU countries do not vote until Sunday, the votes will not be counted until Sunday night. (Politics Live, Guardian)

I seem to recall that Gordon Brown was jeered at for 'clinging on to power' and 'refusing to leave No 10' when, in fact, he was acting correctly and staying in office as PM (as we can't not have one) until such time as the talks about who was to govern had concluded with Clegg et al.

Funny old world...

Clegg actually wanted him to stay another few days so he could try for more concessions from Cameron, but Brown had had enough.

The "squatting in Number 10" stuff (started by Paul Staines IIRC) was indeed a genuine disgrace.

Broadcasters in legal bind over reporting on Tory crisis during election

To complicate matters further, the outcome of the European election result in the UK is not declared until the rest of the EU finishes voting at 10pm on Sunday, putting more restrictions on broadcasters. (Guardian)

I've just noticed this - Prof. Richard Evans has given JRM's The Victorians a really good duffing-up...

https://www.newstatesman.com/culture/bo ... ans-review" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There's a superb list of who JRM has ignored to focus on his political figures but it's followed by this...
The one non-Westminster figure discussed is the cricketer WG Grace, included mainly because, “as every Englishman knows”, more than any other sport, “cricket at its best captures the soul of the nation. Fair play, etiquette and gentlemanly behaviour.”
Except that anyone with any knowledge of the game knows that Grace wasn't above a bit of cheating and gamesmanship from time to time...

A parliamentary report has said the Devon MP and Government Minister Mel Stride has been deliberately dishonest and misleading about the Loan Charge.

Very much agree with that last bit.

I voted Green, Yorks & Humber, but if we still lived in the North East I would most likely have voted Labour, not least because Kirton-Darling is a family friend, though I don't know her personally.

The coal mines thing was an offhand comment by Corbyn not long after he got the leadership, I think some have given it rather more importance than it deserves tbh.

The widespread support the Labour left have given to the Green New Deal matters rather more, really.

Here is an extract from a story Gabriel Pogrund and Tim Shipman wrote earlier this year.

Mel Stride, a Treasury minister, has hosted dinners at his home in recent weeks during which he has made the case for Gove, gathering a cadre of supporters from different wings of the party should he decide to run.

The role of Stride, who runs the Deep Blue group of traditional Tories, as a cheerleader for Gove was so shrouded in secrecy that some MPs believed he was running for leader himself.

Stride further muddied the waters by hosting a dinner a week ago on behalf of the leadership team of Jeremy Hunt, the foreign secretary. (Politics Live, Guardian)
