Ian Lavery:
Thanks Ian, I've never thought of myself as an intellectual before, that's really kind of you.It does feel that a certain portion of ‘leftwing intellectuals’ are sneering at ordinary people.

With respect, sneering is rather your modus operandi, but that isn't contingent on being an intellectual,or not.

Re: Wednesday 29th May 2019
I find it rather ironic that I stopped supporting Labour and joined the Lib-Dems precisely because of the machinations of Alastair Campbell and his ilk.
I might share his brexit views but then I also remember Walter Wolfgang being forcibly removed from a conference for criticising the Iraq war and arrested under anti-terror laws so can't say I feel a great deal of sympathy for Campbell's plight. I think it was daft and counterproductive to kick him out of the party but he'd do well to remember the authoritarian nonsense he and Blair indulged in before claiming to be any kind of martyr.

Not really being on a hitlist, but I did get banned from the members only official Lib-Dem forum 'Lib-Dem voice' for being "relentlessly negative" during the coalition.
Needless to say i had the last laugh.

Whatever else you say about Campbell, he knows how to use words. He could easily have left little doubt how he had voted without explicitly saying so.PaulfromYorkshire wrote:Fair point, but readily enough avoided with a simple who I vote for is my business, which is widely accepted answer to what is quite a personal question.HindleA wrote:He was asked, was it better then to lie?.Whatever your view the stench of hypocrisy of historical and present fervent anti Labourists with a tenuous or even non existent link with the Party rather than myth,is rank.IMHO.
IMHO Campbell knew precisely what he was doing and what the consequences would be. That may be admirable or not. I'm just interested in his motives.
Oh and re Sky's above post, Walter Wolfgang's passing has just been announced at the age of 95.

John Cleese criticised for saying London no longer an English city
Edinburgh had the highest remain vote in the UK, and Manchester also had a higher remain vote than London so he hasn't even got that right.
And as a wealthy tax avoiding 'ex-pat' immigrant to Saint Kitts and Nevis what precisely does he think he is saying? That it's ok for rich people like him to swan off to another country for tax purposes but somehow the less wealthy moving around the world for their own financial reasons is somehow bad? Wouldn't that make him a colossal hypocrite? And why is it bad? Edinburgh is Scotland's most multicultural city but you'd be hard pressed to find any Scots or anyone else claiming it wasn't Scottish. He seems to be morphing into precisely the kind of thoughtless, parochial, narrow minded fool he played in Fawlty Towers only this time it isn't a parody, he's just being a dick.
John Cleese criticised for saying London no longer an English city
Where on Earth to begin with this? Some years ago I opined that London was not really an English city any more
Since then, virtually all my friends from abroad have confirmed my observation
So there must be some truth in it...
I note also that London was the UK city that voted most strongly to remain in the EU
Edinburgh had the highest remain vote in the UK, and Manchester also had a higher remain vote than London so he hasn't even got that right.

The south-west, home to Rees-Mogg’s constituency of North East Somerset, could only account for 22 copies.

A similar, related narrative change is necessary IMHO not least to combat the myriad of myths as to what support means (or should mean-work/participation should be a fundamental right regardless with no strings attached, rather than a relentless battle for far too many in effect to write yourself off to get support.
