Today’s UK construction PMI report is surprisingly weak, says Max Jones, relationship director in Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking’s infrastructure and construction team.

It’s only Tuesday morning, and we’ve already had three piece of weak UK economic data, namely:
UK construction shrank in May, at the fastest pace in a year (see earlier post)
UK manufacturing also contracted last month, at the fastest rate in almost three years (see yesterday’s news story)
UK retail sales fell by 2.7% in May, the worst fall since the British Retail Consortium started counting (see this morning’s news story)

Anyone else see Hammond on Newsnight? Quite apart from his astonishing complacency on poverty and equally deluded assessment of economic success under the tories since 2010, he said plainly that leaving the EU on 31 October with or without a deal was impossible.
In itself an admission of tory incompetence.

If the increase in flyers coming through the letterbox touting for work (need your gutters cleaned?) is anything to go by, we're definitely heading for a slowdown if not an actual downturn.gilsey wrote:'surprisingly'10:42

On McCain, from yesterday. I know we shouldn't be especially pleased just because people are capable of behaving with basic human decency but it's such a marked contrast to what has come after him that it's worth remembering...
Fearing the raw and at times angry emotions of his supporters may damage his campaign, John McCain on Friday urged them to tone down their increasingly personal denunciations of Barack Obama. Each time he tried to cool the crowd, he was rewarded with a round of boos.
"I have to tell you. Sen. Obama is a decent person and a person you don’t have to be scared of as president of the United States," McCain told a supporter at a town hall meeting in Minnesota who said he was “scared” of the prospect of an Obama presidency and of who the Democrat would appoint to the Supreme Court.
“Come on, John!” one audience member yelled out as the Republican crowd expressed dismay at their nominee. Others yelled "liar," and "terrorist." One woman, in the course of a question to McCain said of Obama: "He's an Arab."
McCain, who had shared his wireless microphone with her, yanked it out of her hand. "No, ma'am," the Arizona senator assured. "He's a decent family man and citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that's what this campaign's all about. He's not [an Arab]."

And lo and behold a YouGov poll shows that our much mythologised "traditional working class voters" don't like Trump any more than other people do.
That's dozens of HOT TAKES out of the window (well it isn't, but it should be)

I guess May hasn't officially stepped down yet, so technically such a change could be viewed as before rather than after the fact but too late to prevent the spectacle of no-names falling over themselves to mark their card.Tories poised to change rules for leadership election to reduce crowded field

Someone on Twitter pointing out they should just have called themselves the Remain Party and got on with it. It's a fair point.

Nigel Farage has been given 24 hours to come to Brussels and explain the £450k pounds gift from Arron Banks or face being banned from the European Parliament. He could also have his badge withdrawn, meaning he won't be allowed into parliament in either Strasbourg or Brussels.

I'm sure he could negotiate with them to get his pass back, should it be withdrawn . . .

Eh? The Home Secretary wasn't invited to the State Banquet?
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Ah...either they didn't want to upset their guest or he had a veto - whichever it is, it's still looks pretty bad.Home secretary Sajid Javid was snubbed from attending the lavish state banquet in honour of Donald Trump at Buckingham Palace.
Mr Javid, the son of Pakistani Muslim parents, was the only holder of a great office of state - which include prime minister, foreign secretary, home secretary and chancellor - not to be invited to the opulent dinner hosted by the Queen.
The omission of the Conservative leadership hopeful from the guest list has raised eyebrows in Westminster, as rivals Jeremy Hunt, the foreign secretary, and Michael Gove, the environment secretary, were among senior ministers in attendance.
Mr Javid previously condemned the president for sharing Islamophobic tweets from the far-right extremist group Britain First in 2017.
