Good morfternoon.

I wonder if Michael Gove thought that his drug admission was a canny move or if someone threatened to reveal all (with evidence?) and so he was forced to get in first.

I will not promise tax cuts or spending which we cannot afford. If we can deliver a pragmatic Brexit my priority would be investing more in Education (particularly mid-life), Infrastructure (particularly in the North) and Housing. But let’s be sensible...please...

Toby Young claimed 'youthful indiscretion over things he'd been saying on Twitter, even though Twitter didn't exist until he was in his 40s.

Gove oversaw the introduction of rules that saw teachers struck off for Class A drug use.

It's weird that only Gove is getting hammered over this. I don't remember the media being very interested in the gossip about Osborne when he was chancellor, or this about Boris Johnson:

@RealNatalieRowe
HOLD ON A SEC @BorisJohnson there is NO WAY that your ‘ encounter ‘ with Cocaine was in your University days, you were snorting the stuff up like Nobodies business at the Party in Knightsbridge where you racially abused me and that was early 90’s you absolute LIAR
5:55 PM · Jun 9, 2019
Apparently it's only a problem if you're honest about it and admit it, which does beg the question why Gove would do so when it appears the media are quite happy to turn a blind eye to substantiated third party evidence as long as the minister in question declines to confirm it.

Oops.

UK economy hit by 'dramatic' fall in car output

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48579630
A "dramatic" fall in car production and an easing of stockpiling by manufacturers meant the economy shrank in April, official figures show.

The economy contracted 0.4% from the month before, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The contraction meant growth for the three months to April slowed to 0.3%.

Behind the paywall but Paul Johnson of the IFS pretty much sums up the position of the candidates right now.

Promises, promises: Tory leadership candidates are horrifying Whitehall

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/busi ... -xf9n92cmc
Walk down Horse Guards Road, pass the back entrance to Downing Street and the Foreign Office, enjoy the views across St James’s Park and approach the grand entrance to the Treasury. A soft, intermittent thudding sound becomes apparent, the sound of Treasury officials’ heads gently banging on desks as they listen to the promises being made by the contenders vying to become the new first Lord of the Treasury, better known as the prime minister.

You can't abolish VAT, which raises £140bn a year, and replace with a sales tax. Not a matter of principle but of practicality.

Sales tax at current VAT rate would not work. That's why all OECD countries bar the US, which has very low rates have a VAT as do nearly 170 worldwide
Maybe not then.

This is Leavers Brexit all over again - absurd promises with no foundation in reality.

I'm not sure about this but it appeared to us that as the transition was starting there seemed to be a policy that instead of being entitled to DLA to 16 if you type 1 diabates, you were only entitled until you were 12. We successfully appealed (and we won in part because of the absurdity of having a 15 year old who qualified and a 12 year old with exactly the same condition who didn't).

Michael Gove

Matthew Hancock

Mark Harper

Jeremy Hunt

Sajid Javid

Boris Johnson

Andrea Leadsom

Esther McVey

Dominic Raab

Rory Stewart

Gillan says there are 10 valid nominations.
So that's all of them given Gyimah dropped out this afternoon.

I've just been reading the government reaction to the BBC ending free TV licence for all over-75's and now means testing it.
Prime Minister Theresa May said she was "very disappointed" with the BBC's decision.

A government spokesperson said: "We've been clear that we want and expect the BBC to continue this concession.

"People across the country value television as a way to stay connected, and we want the BBC to look at further ways to support older people.

"Taxpayers want to see the BBC using its substantial licence fee income in an appropriate way to ensure it delivers for UK audiences, which includes showing restraint on salaries for senior staff."
As was said at the time it was transferred to the BBC from the DWP, this was so that the BBC would be blamed when they cut it back.

Gove wasn't "capable" at education - him and his deranged adviser decided to wage war on local authorities, told lies to the public about who ran LA schools, and bribed school to become academies.

And when there were so many of them that the DfE realised they wouldn't be able to cope they came up with an on the hoof policy of Regional School Commissioners with no real idea about how it was going to work.

He completely botched curriculum reform and his History curriculum was so laughably bad and unworkable that it had to be revised so much that it ended up looking like the previous one.

More "meddling" than "capable" - I know a lot of the loud voices on edu twitter liked him but they tend to look at the rhetoric and not the detail.
