Nigel Farage was on the BBC

But that's pretty much the same as nothing happening. In a Groundhog Day sort of way.

If you're bored look at "Tommy Cooper" on Twitter.

He's trending for some reason and folk are all posting their favourite gags :-)

Morning all.

Only Farage asking for someone to be sacked. So, no change there. Oh, and Ann Widdecombe saying that Farage couldn't be Ambassador since he'll be in No 10.

Whoever leaked the Darroch comments looks like they'll be disappointed with the fallout - no sacking, no recall, and no apology for the comments only the leak.

Code: Select all

According to ITV’s Washington correspondent, Robert Moore, “almost everyone in this town [ie, Washington], even in the West Wing, shares [Kim] Darroch’s analysis of the dysfunction and chaos in the White House.”

Might be interesting, if it happens..
"A rare event. Northern Ireland is at the heart of a Commons challenge today to prevent a No Deal Brexit"
https://sluggerotoole.com/2019/07/08/a- ... qus_thread" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Today, some Remain-supporting MPs are expected to launch a new attempt to prevent a potential no-deal during a debate on Northern Irish power-sharing talks. The move, led by Dominic Grieve, the former attorney-general, could involve an amendment to legislation that would require a statement to be made to the Commons in October. This use of parliamentary procedure would in effect stop any government attempt to prorogue, or suspend, parliament as it would be legally required to be sitting.

If there is a serious attempt to suspend parliament to ensure a no deal Brexit, expect not just resistance by MPs but wider social unrest as well.

Ahead of Panorama on Wednesday with a pre-prepared answer to the question "Is Labour Anti-Semitic?", here are a couple of interesting reads I came across on the reporter, John Ware:

There are some quotes around saying she's going to make a statement about her position in the labour party later today. I think it's the deadline for sitting MPs to confirm they want to stand again...

I think it was a bit more categoric than that, though standing somewhere else as not-Labour remains a live possibility.

(but given her age, will she bother?)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that whether or not criminal action is pursued with regard to this 'ere leak depends upon who the guilty party turns out to be.

Universal credit: Multi-million pound scam targets claimants

Tens of millions of pounds of public money is believed to have been stolen, with claimants left owing hundreds, after fraudsters targeted Britain's main welfare benefit, universal credit.

The BBC has been told of "money pouring out of the public purse" as criminals make "staggering" bogus online claims. (BBC News website)
It's a great system, and getting better all the time.

Labour's latest Brexit position, from Pippa Crerar.

BREAKING: After talks today the unions have agreed a common position on Brexit: whatever deal negotiated by Boris Johnson OR exit date on No Deal should go to a second referendum.
Remain vs that deal should be on ballot paper.
Labour would campaign for Remain.
In event of general election, Labour’s manifesto position would be:
- negotiate a deal with EU to respect Brexit vote
- any final Labour deal then put back to the people
- ballot paper would have Labour deal vs Remain
CRUCIAL: Labour position would depend on deal negotiated.

Of course the new position is easily ridiculed.

But this is surely sensible progress towards some kind of consensus.

He's not the government's ambassador is he? He's the Queen's ambassador - we send ambassadors from, and welcome them to, the Court of St James. He's the Head of State's envoy, not the Government's. If Trump wants to announce that our ambassador isn't welcome he needs to tell the Queen.
