I'm never quite clear how some are so relaxed with - and probably never even give a thought to Nato...and yet the thought of military co=operation with our (current) Eu partners is beyond the pale.

And another one gone...
Anne Milton has resigned as skills minister, saying she has “grave concerns” about the prospect of leaving the EU without a deal (something that Boris Johnson says ministers must accept as an option if they want to serve in his cabinet).

Did they outsource the running of it to G4S or Crapita?

So Boris Johnson is the new Conservative Party leader.

Did anyone spot Carrie Symonds there to support her boyfriend? I couldn't see her, just the Johnson clan. Jeremy Hunt had his wife with him.

He's now wibbling horribly. I can't watch much more.

Gary Younge's is spot on.
There is nothing to celebrate in this moment but the symmetry. The leave campaign had no more plans for leaving the European Union than a dog chasing a car has to drive it. Now its most prominent spokesman is in charge of making it happen. For the past three years they have been able to claim that only if a true believer were in charge everything would be different. With Johnson in charge they are running out of people to blame for the situation they created. That, of course, will not stop them. But it does expose them.

Pointing out her actual voting record and public statements is A VILE SLUR!!

(throw in an accusation of "brocialism" for extra centrist brownie points)

On the other hand, Corbyn attending some meeting in the 1980s where a few not very nice people were also present is INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT!!

Got that? Now you too can be a HIGHLY RESPECTED and above all EXTREMELY SENSIBLE political pundit.

Sky News has just broadcast a voiceover which said, "Boris Johnson is the new Prime Minister", accompanied by a recording of Boris Johnson proclaiming, "The people of this country deserve better!" Deliberate, or an editorial faux pas? I expect it will soon bite the dust.

Wherever you put yourself on it,doesn't exempt yourself,an observation I have always had,but particularly now-a vaguely left position is deemed "hard left" by a "centrist" narrative determined to prove themselves correct in the ploughing of both parties are extreme ignoring their own extremist position.

I agree 2015 was a pivotal election and said so at the time and what is happening now certainly flows from that but it's nevertheless the case that the British public has rejected a hard Tory Brexit in a fair and free election. We really don't deserve the Tory party's continued inability to accept that.

Six local council byelections last week - the last of the May era!

Cardiff - to start with a Tuesday poll for a change, this saw a LibDem hold in a ward where the LibDems had taken all three seats comfortably in 2004/2008/2012 before the Tories sprang a surprise by snatching a seat (and their winner outpolling two of the LibDem candidates) in the most recent 2017 elections; however, a LibDem share of 55% and swing of over 15% indicates a return to earlier times here. Labour little changed on 16% (an improvement on most of their Welsh results recently) whilst Plaid stood here after sitting it out two years ago, but a share of 4% was consistent with their previous showings.

Richmond-upon-Thames - LibDem hold in a ward that split 2C/1LD last year (though the second LibDem finished just a vote behind the runner up Tory) after consistently returning three Tories, sometimes by hefty margins, in all previous elections since the present boundaries came into force in 2002. This one wasn't very close either, only it was the LibDems now on top as they approached 60% of the vote and a further13% swing from a year ago. No other parties ever get a look in here, but the Women's Equality candidate had the unusual distinction of their 3% being just enough to beat Labour who were down by half on 2018.

Daventry DC - LibDem gain from Tory in a ward that has previously been safe for the Tories ever since they got 3 seats in the 2012 all-out elections (a curiosity - whilst unlike most districts in Northants this council elects by thirds, the elections due in May were cancelled as for all the others in the county as a new unitary body is being set up next year) when the Greens came second - fairly unusual then - but two rapid by-elections followed when they made a decreasing impact, UKIP took second in its 2014 "golden year" but then also vanished subsequently. So this win - with almost half the vote and a swing of over 30% - really did come from nowhere - Labour have been second here in all previous elections since the second quick byelection in 2013, but now lost 10 points to 13%.

Ceredigion - Plaid Cymru hold with 63% of the vote, beating the LibDems by almost exactly two to one. Despite this the LibDems doubled their share since 2017, which was itself an advance on previous elections there they had been the sole token opposition to Plaid as the Welsh Nats took shares of over 80% (85% back in 2004) Still very comfortable for them, of course - Labour made an appearance last time but dropped a bit to just 5% now.

Wiltshire - LibDem hold with over half the vote, this was a five point drop since 2017 in a ward that had become increasingly safe for them after the Tories ran them fairly close in the inaugural 2009 unitary elections. Independents then came second in 2013 before sitting the last election out, but the top placed of two Indies this time was a respectable runner up with a quarter of the vote. Tories were halved on last time, as were Labour who dropped to 6% - the Independent who had stood here a decade ago tried again, but got less than 2% (well down on last time)

Ashford DC - Tory hold with 37% of the vote which was a ten point drop from what were already pretty disastrous elections in these parts two months ago, prior to that this single member ward had always been very safe for them - and they were now run close by the Greens who have been building a long term presence here, and went up 7 points to 31%. This council was the only one in the country where the LibDems *lost* their previous representation this year, and as if to reflect that they dropped another 7 points from two months ago - only just finishing ahead of the localist Ashford Independents who scored 11%, some way short of the runners-up spot they got in their previous 2011 showing. Also ran places taken by UKIP, Labour (down seven points) and finally a generic Independent who were all in the 3-4% range.

Three contests this week to start the Johnson epoch.

After Johnson's win, the second least surprising thing to happen today...

Also absent will be Kyle Kashuv. The conservative survivor of the Parkland shooting had served as Turning Point’s high school outreach director, until a classmate surfaced racial slurs he had made in a Google document during a class project. This incident resulted in him losing his place at Harvard University and prompted one of the year’s more absurd free speech debates.

Crystal Clanton probably won’t make the cut. The former national field director once texted a Turning Point colleague: ‘I HATE BLACK PEOPLE. Like fuck them all…I hate blacks. Sorry end of story.’

It’s also unclear whether Juan Pablo Andrade will show up. He was a Turning Point policy adviser who got in trouble last year for saying ‘the only thing the Nazis didn’t get right is they didn’t keep fucking going!’ on video.

What is Boris Johnson's Brexit plan?
By Reality Check team
BBC News

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-48496082" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Mr Johnson is saying the Irish border can be dealt with after the UK leaves the EU, instead of as part of the withdrawal agreement.

Obstacle: The EU has said the Irish backstop cannot be removed from the withdrawal agreement - the deal to delay the UK's exit until the end of October specifically prohibited its renegotiation.
Reality check is right...this is where the "It'll be fine - I'll wing it" stance will come unstuck.
