Three local council byelections yesterday:

Gloucester DC - two contests here, both gains for the LibDems; the first was a gain from the Tories in a ward which split 1C/1LD in the 2016 all-out elections (the first after major boundary changes) with over 45% of the vote and a swing of approaching 10%. This pair of elections saw the debut of the Brexit Party at local government level, and in this one they managed just over 10% of the vote (less than UKIP had managed three years ago) followed by Labour who more than halved to 4%, just ahead of the Greens (also slightly down) and lastly - and very much so - UKIP who managed just 6 *votes* in all as opposed to roughly 1 in 8 *voters* last time around. The other saw a LibDem gain from Labour who in 2016 beat the Tories in a straight fight here by the now totemic score of 52-48 - it was even closer this time as the LibDems won with 30% of the vote and just three votes ahead of the Tories who thus almost gained the seat despite an 18 point drop in their share. Labour were down by considerably more than even that, of course, and weren't far ahead of the Brexit candidate who polled over 16% in this one. Greens polled another 4%, whilst UKIP had the comparitive electoral riches of 1.6% in also wooden spooning this one.

Hartlepool - Labour hold here (though in the chaotic recent politics here, their incumbent had been one of several to go Independent) with another 30% score (and eight vote margin) in a highly fragmented contest even though neither Tories or LibDems stood. This ward in recent years has been a contest between Labour and Independents in various guises - splitting 2Lab/1Ind in the 2012 all-out elections after boundary changes, then a win for the now disbanded localists Putting Hartlepool First in 2014 when Labour came 4th, only for Labour to come back with wins in 2015 and 2016 before the Independents triumphed in 2018 and then took a Labour seat in a byelection later that year. This year's elections were horrific for Labour after well publicised factional infighting, and the council leadership went to a coalition led by a new localist group the Independent Union who trounced Labour by 2 to 1 in a straight fight here. Labour were actually slightly down on then, but the IU went down by more than half in the first test of them in power locally. Greens managed a respectable 16% in their intervention, not far ahead of the far right For Britain outfit, then UKIP last with 9% - a respectable score for them these days but well down on the shares they used to achieve in one of their former strongholds.

Two contests to start August.

"...uncontentious forms of international coordination are hardly uncommon. Indeed they are ubiquitous. They are not usually newsworthy unless something goes wrong, or someone drunk on sovereignty is looking for a fight. Otherwise we take them for granted. When you post a letter to another country, you have good reason to expect it to arrive. You can access a mobile phone signal while travelling. When it is midday in London, it is nine p.m. in Brisbane. Medications in which the active ingredients are measured in billionths of a kilogram are exported and imported. And there is no border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. All of this happens, and none of it just happens."

The official transcript of parliamentary proceedings, Hansard, records more than 700 instances of Rees-Mogg using one or other of the banned words or phrases.

He's trying to give over this persona of lovable eccentric to mask his horrific social views.
Rees-Mogg has also used his position of influence to argue against abortion, even in cases of rape, and same-sex marriage.

I have said before that Brexit is like a political Ponzi scheme. It was a political movement that promised impossible returns: a swift, painless, problem-free departure from the EU. The fact that it is now obvious this is not the case does not lead them to change their mind, but to double down on the concept. When you have all your capital (political as much as financial) invested in a Ponzi scheme, you cannot accept that it is fraudulent, as then you lose everything. You have to persuade, or force, others to believe it is still a valid investment, in order to preserve your capital. You cannot take it out, so you want others to carry on paying in.
