Still at least he's now got a Countdown clock!Boris Johnson’s warning that he could drag Britain out of the EU without a deal within 100 days has sent sterling tumbling to the lowest levels in more than two years.
Since his elevation to No 10, sterling has crashed below $1.22 against the US dollar and recorded the worst performance of any major currency in the world over the month of July.
“These asset prices reflect market participants’ perceptions of the likelihood and consequences of a no-deal Brexit,” the Bank said.
Despite the growing risks to the economy, the Bank said it continued to assume a smooth Brexit deal with Brussels can be reached – a position it acknowledged was increasingly inconsistent with the market reaction.

By the way, I've just had a scout around the TV schedules - Sky News Channel (Freeview 233) will be covering the by-election from midnight tonight. I can't see it specifically mentioned on any other channels' listings.

Yes, I'd noticed that - notwithstanding the election rules about coverage until the polls close.citizenJA wrote:The subdued by-election media coverage is interesting. To answer your question ("Is that typical?") -
I'd say it isn't typical, especially given the significance of the outcome. We normally get some dog photographs at least!

Yes, there was no thought of what would happen when they have thousands of separate organisations under their direct control. Gove's panicky answer was the Regional Schools Commissioners - ironically, given Cummings dislike of Whitehall, civil servants...He has certainly proved himself a brilliant destroyer. As adviser to Michael Gove at the Department for Education, Cummings took aim at what he believed was a cosy agreement between Whitehall bureaucrats and local councillors to make life easy for themselves at the expense of the nation’s children. He broke the grip of local authorities over schools, but left behind a fragmented non-system of independent state academies, with opaque rules and accountabilities, and no mechanism for scaling up or replicating instances of excellence.

UK manufacturing 'suffocating' as output slips to seven-year low
https://www.theguardian.com/business/20 ... n-year-low
Factory output in Britain has fallen at the fastest rate in seven years as the risks posed to the economy by a no-deal Brexit rise and as global demand falters.
According to the monthly snapshot from IHS Markit and the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply, UK manufacturers scaled back production because of fading demand at home and abroad.
Output and new orders shrank as factories came under pressure from the high level of uncertainty over Britain’s future trading relationship with the EU and from the US-China trade war, which has caused a sharp slowdown in international trade.

Tory MP Phillip Lee to 'spend summer' considering Lib Dem defection

And if he does, the government loses its majority.Dr Phillip Lee, who supports a second EU referendum, revealed he feels "politically homeless" following the election of Boris Johnson as Tory leader.
The new prime minister has promised to take the UK out of the EU on 31 October "do or die", raising the prospect of a no-deal Brexit.
But Dr Lee argued such a policy could see the Tories shed supporters.

No sign of any liveblog activity at the guardian, but there are lots of others, including BBC News (and I'm guessing it will be the focus on the BBC News Channel) and Wales Online.

While waiting for tonights result I give you...
The name that pond snail competition.
I buried a washing up bowl in the garden a couple of months ago, filled it with pebbles and a broken plant pot (and water obviously) then added some plants I stole from a local stream and just left it to see what happened and today I discovered this little glorious gastropod.
The name can be of either gender as our little friend here is a hermaphrodite.
And no 'Snaily McSnailface' will not be accepted.
Anyone wishing to participate should PM me their answer by Sunday evening when the winner will be announced.

LibDems are perking up - according to Lewis Goodall (Sky) speaking from the count.
No good at naming snails. The hermaphrodite element makes the choice of name a bit difficult.

Re: Thursday 1st August 2019
As a former Lib Dem of the Charlie Kennedy social democratic persuasion I can only say he's a perfect fit. I remember after Nick Clegg and his Orange book allies staged their little coup he told us the Lib Dems were not a place for refugees from the Labour party. Jo Swinson of course was one of his staunchest allies and yet has welcomed Chuka with open arms. Clegg was worried that due to an influx of ex-Labour members furious about the Iraq war the membership of the party would end up too left wing to stomach his nonsense so he essentially told them to fuck off. Which they did, along with thousands of left wing Lib Dems like myself.PorFavor wrote:Divine retribution for Chuka Umunna being elbowed in perhaps. He's such a hypocrite.
What was left were a bunch of political opportunists who thought being in a small pond might make them big.
So as I say he's a perfect fit.
And a good name for the snail.
