Afternoon all.
As a random comment, why is it so difficult to find bayonet-fitting lightbulbs recently?
When a book has a recommendation from Andrew Roberts like this:
“Everything you’ve heard about the supposed evils of British imperialism will be turned on its head by Jeremy Black’s thoughtful, informed, and intelligent analysis. If you happen to be British, the shame you’ve been taught to feel about your forefathers’ work will be transformed into a genuine and lasting sense of pride.”
You could be forgiven, given his recent form in extolling books, for assuming that it's a pile of utter cack.
And apparently, it is.

"oh, no...it's just Corbyn we object to...get a different Labour leader & it'd be good...".
^This is a lie.
It's become apparent to me some would rather crash people and country so Tories remain in government.
I've lived through media's sustained personal attacks and continual denigration of Ed Miliband and the current Labour party leader. Picking at the leaders is the only way a dishonourable and harmful party manage getting people to vote against their own interests or stay away from voting out of apathy caused by sustained despair.
If Corbyn were as useless as some stridently insist he is, it'd be no big deal including the Labour leader in their Government of National Unity (GNU). If Corbyn were a dangerous person, the accusations would be substantiated. There's nothing. Nothing but false and infantile slander. There's no reasonable arguments against the current or former Labour leaders. Both are decent people in a fundamentally good political party working together with a lot of other decent people.
Every sector - health, education, transport, energy, international relations and the economy unequivocally indicate abject Tory failure. Tories know they've nothing to offer most people and that's why they declare war. External bogey creation is all they've got.
The unintelligible, irrational bullshit I'm expected to believe makes me feel angry.

Good morfternoon.
In the event of a General Election, what would happen if (fairly unlikely, I realise, as his majority of around 5,000 would, I imagine, get a boost because constituents probably like having their MP as Prime Minister) Boris Johnson were to lose his seat? Still, stranger things have happened.

Failing that one way or another, his goose would surely be cooked.
Though the likelihood of him losing his seat *and* his party retaining power is indeed not that high, amusing thought as it may be.

Re: Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th August 2019
Three local council byelections in the past week:
Cambridge DC - LibDem hold with nearly 60% of the vote, an increase from almost exactly half this May. This is a ward which returned three LibDems very safely in the 2004 all out elections and remained strong for a while afterwards, before the coalition years saw Labour make up some ground. In the last few elections the LibDems have drawn away again however, and won by around 15% earlier this year - and this result was a further 9% swing away from Labour since then (though that may not be unconnected with students mostly being absent this time of year) Which might also explain the Greens dropping a few points since the last election, just ahead of the Tories who had a modest advance to 11%.
East Northamptonshire DC - Tory hold with 53% in a straight fight with Labour, in a two member ward which was denied its scheduled chance to vote this May after the elections in Northants districts (along with neighbouring Bucks) were cancelled ahead of a new unitary being voted for next year. Thus 2015 was the most recent comparison point, and it was a swing of about 7% to Labour since then - when the Tories won both seats, as they had in the first 2007 election on these boundaries, after Labour got a councillor in 2011. There had also been a BNP candidate four years ago, though the changes in vote share since then does *not* mean that "their votes went Labour" as some have too gleefully claimed
Worcester DC - LibDem gain with approaching half the vote, meaning they return to this council after a gap of four years - this ward safely returned three LibDems in the 2004 all-outs, though as in many other cases that altered in more recent years and close results in 2010 and 2011 (the last yellow win before now) were followed by Tory gains in the three consecutive elections, in 2015 by almost 2 to 1, before the LibDems started to narrow the gap again. Tories did not go down without a fight, only losing by a couple of points and increasing their share modestly since May (maybe helped by UKIP's absence for the first time since 2012 in this ward) and it was no surprise the other candidates - Green on 4% and Labour on 2% - saw their support squeezed to nearly vanishing point.
Just one contest in the coming week.

Caroline Lucas in the Guardian.
Caroline Lucas in the Guardian.
This isn't about Lucas at all but it does occur that the Lib Dems have spent a decade saying that the hard truth of being the minor party in a coalition is that you don't really have any say, you just have to provide support and argue backstage (so they claim). And yet now they are trying to dictate terms to the Labour Party. There were about five and a half tories for every Lib Dem in 2010 - 306 con, 57 Lib Dem. There are 19 Labour MPs for every Lib Dem now - 247 labour to 13 lib dems. How fine to see that they have finally found their voice. This article was sent as a letter by Caroline Lucas to Heidi Allen MP, Kirsty Blackman MP, Yvette Cooper MP, Justine Greening MP, Sylvia Hermon MP, Liz Saville Roberts MP, Anna Soubry MP, Nicola Sturgeon MSP, Jo Swinson MP and Emily Thornberry MP

Much as I hate to say this, I told you so.
You can bitch about the Lib-Dems to your hearts content but opportunistic bastards that they are once again they find themselves as kingmakers.
From a remainer perspective we'd all have much rather voted Labour.
But you seem to have a bunch of idiots in charge.
So even Jo Swinson becomes the least worst option.
Despite her having a despicable voting record, Clegg's private secretary through all the worst of the coalitions cuts.
She's a piece of shit. Emblematic of the shift to the right the Lib-Dems took post Charlie Kennedy.
And yet I'd still vote Lib-Dem regardless if it meant stopping this brexit nonsense.
Labour have nobody to blame for this but themselves.

Re: Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th August 2019
The Lib Dems have made it clear that they won't countenance any kind of deal with the labour party. Unless Labour radically splits- and given that it didn't happen when the bunch of them wandered off earlier in the year that seems very unlikely - then the only thing a vote for the lib dems is going to do is to support a Johnson government - either by taking votes away from labour candidates in constituencies and keeping tory MPs in or by electing lib dems who will vote to keep Johnson in power in return for a referendum which they'll lose.

And the thing that really fucks me off is while the rest of us are trying to get along and compromise for the greater good the Labour Party is being a colossal dick.
All it cares about is electoral success for itself.
Not the greater good for us all.
