Morning all.

Another triumph for outsourcing!

I wonder how many people calling AF knew that it was being run by a private sector company?

Labour indeed didn't win adam's byelection yesterday, but their vote held up decently. Whilst the winning Tories were down significantly.

[Jo Swinson] Can you confirm that you HAVE NOT been in discussions with [Boris Johnson] specifically between the 9th - 12th of this Month of August ? Cause nothing gets passed the Nats. A simple YES or NO, will suffice. I’ll wait, but not too long

Well if that is at all true, she is in deep bother. Though despite my low rating of her, I find it hard to believe Swinson would be *that* gullible.

One local council byelection yesterday:

Shropshire - Tory hold, but with a 17 point drop since the last election in 2017 to under 40 per cent. The first election for the unitary council in 2009 saw the Tories beat a single LibDem opponent by over 2 to 1, but Labour comfortably took second in 2013 and retained that spot in a previous byelection in 2015 as well as two years ago. Though they only had a small drop in share since then, they had to concede second place now to the LibDems who increased 14 points to over a quarter of the vote (their best showing since that original 2009 poll) Greens also more than doubled their share on last time as they scored 11%.

A single contest again next week.

Boris Johnson to head to Paris and Berlin in bid to break Brexit deadlock

PM set to meet Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron ahead of next week’s G7 meeting

Boris Johnson is expected to make a diplomatic dash to meet Emmanuel Macron in Paris and Angela Merkel in Berlin early next week as he seeks to break the Brexit impasse.

The prime minister, who has yet to leave the UK to meet any of the EU’s leaders since entering Downing Street, will also speak to the Irish prime minister, Leo Varadkar, and Donald Tusk, the European council president, by phone, the Guardian understands. (Guardian)

Torrential rain - which shows no sign of easing off - here, too. But it's bloody cold. Must check the thermometer. Not that that will change anything.

The ward splits something like 60/40 between really quite comfortable (and moving up from there) private housing in the larger part and a big ex-council estate for the smaller part. The turnout on the estate was about a third of the turnout in the rest of the ward. So, in a simplistic way, there you go. It's an annoying result because we didn't see any sign of the lib dems campaigning at all - they weren't telling or knocking their vote out on the day.
