Morning all.

Ian Birrell has constructed a hand reference to the hypocrites now in the cabinet who though that what they now seemingly approve of would be an outrage. But that was then...

There are people seriously saying this is OK because the proroguing they were talking about was different.

We're only talking about a few days.... It's not the same at all....

There's an element of provocation in it imo, if you assume MPs would have voted for conference recess it is only a few days, so why do it?

EXCL Am told that George Young (Lord Young of Cookham) has quit as a government whip in the Lords over Boris Johnson's decision to prorogue parliament.

He was a minister under every Tory prime minister since Thatcher, and in Major and Cameron cabinets.

Is Parliament prorogued in this manner during party conference season?

No, that is a recess and the Commons has to vote on it.

There was a very good chance that MPs would have voted it down this year due to the Brexit deadline.

Alan Renwick
‏ @alanjrenwick

(Quick digression: I've had a few comments suggesting today's decision is trivial, as parliament was going off for the conference recess anyway. This is wrong. (1) Recess is not prorogation. Lots of parliamentary business goes on in recess. Everything stops in prorogation. (6/12)

I understand some business goes on during recess, committees can sit and other things.

No business at all in prorogation.

edit - I think I'm quoting Renwick there, so I'm assuming he's right!

I'd be very interested to hear AK's views on the centrists proposition that the Lib Dem is the one to take down Johnson in Uxbridge in a GE.

As they were nowhere in 2017, and Labour a good second, it seems to me they're proposing BJ getting back in.

If the GE is set to be after Brexit, then the Brexit Party will fall apart - their main selling point is Brexit - the rest of it is populist guff.

LibDem's historical habit of supporting Tory governments simultaneously declaring pursuit of different policy is uncanny, an accomplishment, really.

Lots of people have come to believe the only "real" Brexit is no deal. That may change after we actually exit, but "betrayal" myths can be irrationally powerful.

She's an able politician, something Scottish voters appear to appreciate, the Tories may well feel the lack of her influence in Scotland going into a GE. We can but hope ;)
