Quiet here today!

Well the news about Jo Johnson might liven things up a bit.......

More grief for Boris Johnson as his nonsensical bluster over the legitimacy of such a long prorogment is forensically taken apart in court:

First intervention from a judge, Sir Terence Etherton asks if Lord Pannick's argument, in essence, is that the PM must give a "sound reason" for such a long closure of Parliament that interferes with its sovereignty. Lord Pannick, in short, says it is.

Yes - from what I'm hearing, he's resigning because Boris Johnson is such a poisonous toad, and he'd (Jo Johnson) like to maintain some self-respect.

MPs to be asked again on Monday to vote for early election, Rees-Mogg says (Politics Live, Guardian)

It seems to me, with the government's loss of a majority, that there will be plenty of opportunities for a GE sooner rather than later, but there will only be one opportunity for Johnson to campaign to take us out of the EU by the 31st Oct "do or die".

I think the right strategy would be for Labour to hold their nerve and only concede to an election once an article 50 extension has been secured. It is not a strategy without risks though and could prove difficult to pursue.

Glad I'm not having to make these decisions :D

As I've probably said already the whole ethos of the Fixed Term act is that an early election can only be held when everyone agrees it is the right course.

Johnson can wait.

I've just read this contribution from a poster over at the Guardian:
Keith Macdonald

0 1

An election is now inevitable though it is a most unsatisfactory way to deal with Brexit since a minority of votes can win a commanding majority and dictate to the majority. This is exactly what Johnson hopes to do by holding on to an English nationalist right-wing bloc of his remodelled Conservatives in alliance (disclosed or not) with Farage.
I think the poster has put the situation very well.

It was kind of happenstance that I saw it, as it came up when I refreshed the Politics Live page, but I think it's a good post.

It could yet transpire that the "alliance" with Farage that our PM has staked literally everything on is fool's gold, especially if even more "mainstream" Tories fall by the wayside.

I'm watching Boris Johnson's speech (in Yorkshire). Dreadful (and even the BBC is saying so - "he was all over the place"). One of the assembled police cadets (who he kept waiting for so long) nearly passed out, and had to sit down.

Fantastic!

I mean, it was genuinely bizarre wasn't it.

But we all know how the right wing papers will write it up tomorrow :D

Minister announces intention to stand down

The Northern Ireland minister, Nick Hurd, has become the latest Tory MP to announce he will not stand at the next general election as he cited the “ongoing division” over Brexit. (Politics Live, Guardian)
Of course, this won't have any immediate effect on the numbers - but even so.

Benjamin Netanyahu has met Boris Johnson in London as part of a drive to discourage world powers from dialogue with Iran.
---
The Israeli prime minister was in Downing Street with his preoccupied British counterpart on Thursday for 29 minutes....
---
Netanyahu praised Johnson for his “staunch stance against antisemitism and ... support for Israel’s security”.

I was unaware Netanyahu was going to visit. I don't usually get briefed ahead of time but I was surprised to learn of his meeting with Johnson today.
