“The Commission can continue to work and decide legally,” Mr Piris wrote on Twitter, citing a precedent dating back to 1999.
Instead, he said: “The UK will be brought to the EUCJ [the European Court of Justice] for violation of its obligation.”

I just saw an outdoor interview with Len McCluskey. It looked pretty cold where he was. None too warm here, either, although the sun's out.

I think that Jezza is due to give his biennial speech there this week, it may be followed with a bit more interest than usual.

Am confident with our increasingly visible and winning national personality that the EU/rest of the planet will be falling over themselves to give us as great a deal as possible in any future negotiations about anything that comes up. I know I am.

European officials have accused Boris Johnson of reneging on pledges to uphold the Good Friday agreement, ahead of the prime minister’s first meeting with his Irish counterpart.

Johnson will meet the Irish taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, in Dublin on Monday at a tumultuous moment in the Brexit process, with only 52 days until the UK’s departure. Talks are set to be tense as fears grow in Dublin and Brussels that the British prime minister is backsliding on promises to protect the tightly knit economic and social links on the island of Ireland.

“The commitment to all aspects and all the provisions of the letter and spirit of the Good Friday agreement recently seems to be taken more lightly than before,” a senior diplomat from a continental member state told the Guardian. “This avoidance of the hard border, it is not just a desire, it is not just about preferences, it is legal obligation.” (Guardian)
I await this forthcoming meeting with great interest.

Went to visit a certain Hindle this weekend and I fear it's my sad duty to inform you all there is a thieving swine amongst us. Not wanting to impose upon my host's generosity I purchased some victuals for myself on the way and placed them in the fridge. Amongst these was a lasagne. Approximately half an hour after my arrival I couldn't help but notice said Hindle tucking into what appeared to be a lasagne of similar appearance and dimensions. When asked from where Hindle had obtained this suspicious lasagne it immediately became apparent the lasagne was mine. And this wasn't some frozen nonsense, it was a fresh lasagne from the Co-op.

Hindle's feeble excuse for such shabby behaviour was that the lasagne apparently looked like other lasagnes that had been in the fridge on some previous unspecified date and not wishing to create a scene I magnanimously allowed the matter to drop despite the unlikely and wholly unsatisfying explanation.

So ladies and gentleman I feel I must warn you, if you are ever to meet Hindle keep your lasagnes well guarded at all times.

The subsequent compensation of a Chinese meal can be safely ignored as it was evidently an attempt to assuage guilt.

It wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't previously said that thing about not wanting to share a lasagne with Hindle in front of all the media.

Imagine how I felt. There was a surreal moment of trying to persuade myself that what I was seeing couldn't possibly be true, that Hindle couldn't be eating my lasagne that I'd just bought, before reality kicked in and I had to admit the true horror of the situation.

I was too busy wandering about looking at Roman stuff...including one site where I was literally the only person there - no staff, no other visitors. Just me in a field...

If you insist upon risking it I left a bag of chili pitta crisps out and they remained unpilfered so perhaps they repel him somehow.

I would suggest making some kind of charm out of them.

Ah I see you've attempted to blunt my wrath by admitting all your crimes with a public confession.

Well let's deal with these point by point.

True, you did indeed eat my lasagna. I believe I've expanded upon said heinous act above.

True, you didn't even have any bread.

False, you didn't keep me awake because I use earplugs as a matter of routine.

False, your excessive farting did not in fact cause me to change colour.

True, your Leeds United bottle opener playing their FA cup song from 1972 every time I opened a bottle was exceedingly irritating.

But apart from all that I reckon we had a good weekend :D .

Anyway so I found myself in Chesterfield today with an hour to kill so went to see the crooked spire and then began aimlessly wandering about as you do until a bloke approached wearing a 'Remoaner and Proud' t-shirt. I gave him a thumbs up and ended up chatting to him and his wife for a good 20 minutes. I say chatting, we were mostly going on about how thick brexiters were, and how they were all stupid racists and that kind of thing. Even with people I've never met in my life it was like going through a set of rehearsed lines, call and response, I don't believe any actual thought was involved at all, just repeating familiar and comforting phrases and arguments.

It left me feeling distinctly uncomfortable.

Possibly obvious, but good (institute of government blog.)
"No-deal brexit preparations and a general election campaign do not mix"
https://www.instituteforgovernment.org. ... do-not-mix" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This government wants the UK to ‘Get ready for Brexit' on 31 October. But a general election campaign before that deadline has passed and an extension is secured will inevitably disrupt the government’s preparations for the possibility of a no-deal Brexit. Civil service no-deal preparation would be restricted in the weeks running up to polling day, and ministers would be pounding the pavements rather than preparing in their departments.
A snap election campaign just does not mix with no-deal preparations if the October 31 deadline is still in play"
