Good morfternoon.

I read that Margaret Beckett's name is being floated as a possible candidate who would be acceptable to most parties. I know we're going back a bit, but I thought she did a good job in the wake of John Smith's death.
On the subject of who might head an interim government, if Boris Johnson were to lose a confidence vote and if the opposition parties were to unite behind someone else who could take over solely to negotiate a Brexit delay with the EU and then hold a general election, Newsnight’s Nicholas Watt says Margaret Beckett is a possible candidate. She's been supportive of Corbyn from time to time too.

I caught a bit of Newsnight last night, Maitlis asked Hilary Benn straight out if he wanted JC to be PM and he said 'I do' quite convincingly.

Yes - I feel that she might prove the most non-divisive (in Labour Party terms, as well as more generally) option.

I keep recalling those appalling prison sentences for people who’d picked up bottles of water or (in one case) received a pair of shorts in the 2011 riots. How keen the Tories were to show the importance of obeying the law.

Johnson's Tories aren't bothering with coherence, order or even reason. One example from tonight, Johnson on record in the House saying words then when asked about them, he claimed he didn't say them an hour later. UK Supreme Court ruled he's illegally prorogued Parliament. Johnson declines respecting rule of law. He's like a distasteful below the line troll. His methods are obnoxious lies and outlandish pronouncements. Sane, responsible people must keep a record, confront him, hold him accountable, tell the truth and meet his chaos with calm truth.

Businesses deny Gove claims on no-deal preparation

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-49833221

In the resumed Commons session, the chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster said: "The automotive sector, who I met this week, confirmed that they were ready, the retail sector said they were ready."

Three attendees at the relevant meeting in Coventry this week told the BBC this was not an accurate reflection of Monday's meeting with manufacturers.

"I was at the meeting. There's no way that is the message he could have gone away with," said one business leader.

Another present, when asked if Mr Gove had been told by the car industry that it was ready, replied: "No! We said we are planning as best we can, but cannot prepare for all eventualities and tariffs alone undermine our viability. We want a deal. No deal is not an option. Catastrophic."
