This morning: Priti Patel announces the government will get tough on crime.

Also today: The treasurer of the 1922 committee, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP, is now in police custody after a ‘punch-up’ with security.

The Tories have lost their ideology. Now they are merely the party of resentment
After three decades of intellectual decline, the Conservative party stands for nothing but Brexit

William Davies

Sajid Javid says everyone wants to get Brexit done. That’s patently not true
When politicians say they speak for ‘the people’ they’re using an old political trick to deny the very existence of dissenters

I rarely tolerate any political journalists' writing on a wet Autumn weekday in the late afternoon. I read these one after the other and felt okay afterward.

My husband independently came to the same conclusion. This is literally the only sane explanation for Johnson's nonsensical claim to enjoy painting model buses:

https://kottke.org/19/10/boris-johnson-shady-seo-master" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson appears to be strategically using particular words and phrases in speeches and appearances as SEO bait to bury unfavorable news about himself in Google’s search results

In fact, perhaps he was so embarrassed by the model buses thing that he came up with a real bus policy just to bump it down the Google hit list. I wouldn't put it past him. He treats everything like a game, why not government transport strategy?!

Investment in buses isn't bad news.

And it's better than failed London retro buses, lies on the side of buses or painting buses made of boxes :D

To be fair "get Brexit done" doesn't necessarily mean exiting the EU on Halloween. Wanting to revoke A50 or another referendum to "settle the issue" can be argued to be that as well.

(though of course I expect Javid didn't mean that)

I'm now looking forward to seeing how Boris works "disposable cups" into a more favourable headline.

Meanwhile, most of twitter have learnt how to spell "Acuri" rather than "model" and the story, the one that matters, is refusing to die:

Except all this conference will have done is have people who are about it sitting at home saying 'But we've got contactless payments. And we can charge things. And we've got wifi, when it works. We just haven't got any buses.'

Priti Patel, the home secretary, on whom irony is not lost as she declared: “Here in Manchester, the Conservative party takes its rightful place as the party of law and order in Britain once again.” Just one week ago, the government was found to have unlawfully prorogued parliament....

Apparently the Daily Telegraph - the paper for which the Prime Minister used to write a regular column - has managed to get a copy of the proposal which the Prime Minister will present to the EU. And presumably, at some point, to Parliament.

Nope, can't see a single thing wrong with that...
