Tory NHS shake-up blamed for fall in child vaccination rates
This was pretty obvious from the figures and the media should have spotted it and asked questions rather than run with the government's whole anti-vaxxers narrative. Although there has been a small drop off in 1st vaccinations which could be due to anti-vax sentiment, it's the bigger drop off in follow up vaccinations that jumps out. People who do the first jab but not the second are far more likely to have missed out because of a poor notification and delivery system than reluctance. Hence take up when parents are still in regular contact with health visitors has always been better than when the only contact is by letter and that last pre-school booster can be the hardest to make sure everyone has. I'm not really in favour of vaccinations being compulsory to attend school, as the government is suggesting, but I think starting school could provide an opportunity to check everyone's up to date and offer catch up vaccinations at school clinics for those who want them.

DUP conference: Arlene Foster to reaffirm opposition to Brexit deal

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-50189349
Last year, Boris Johnson was centre stage at the DUP conference and his relationship with the party seemed strong.

One year on, the now-prime minister and the DUP are at odds over the government's Brexit strategy and there will be no Conservative MPs present at Saturday's conference.

The party opposes the consent mechanism in the deal that would give Stormont a straight majority vote on continuing EU customs rules.

ARE YOU SERIOUS?! A senior NHS boss got a £200k redundancy package...and he joined the NHS in a new senior role a couple of months later!
Seems to me that if you run the NHS as a lot of different - and competing - businesses then you run the risk of this happening - chap gets made redundant from one "company" and then turns up working for a different one later.

I doubt that you could stop this happening - any such provision in his contract would get thrown out for restraint of trade.

One of our technical production managers was made redundant and then was later hired by a company in the same part of the group.

Although the more long term position and ambitions of the various parties seem relatively clear, I'm really struggling to predict what their short term moves will be. "If in doubt, do nowt" seems a favourite approach, however, so I'm guessing Arlene's speech will probably be a disappointment for those hoping for fireworks and an end to the Brexit impasse.

Not much choice, really, voting it down would only hasten the GE that will lose them seats and end their role as kingmaker.

NEW: A new plan tonight to offer Boris Johnson the pre-Christmas election he craves.

The Lib Dems have drawn up a bill that would allow Johnson to secure a December election with a simple majority of MPs. Crucially, the SNP will back it.
This is coming from the Observer, so I'd take the DUP backing it with a pinch of salt, however....there is some merit in the idea of Parliament amending the Fixed Term Parliaments Act in order to take control of the timing.

The difficulty for me is an election risks Johnson gaining a majority to put together with the Henry VIII powers on Brexit and an extra couple of years to screw the country over.

As such, the idea of having a referendum on Johnson's deal before a GE also has merit. Much harder to achieve, though.

Has there been a more pointless piece of legislation in recent times than the fixed term parliament act? I wonder if the way to fix it would be to get rid of the ability of parliament to actively choose an election, even with an enhanced majority, but instead limit it to a no-confidence vote. If a government wants to cut and run early it has to submit to that indignity.

On powers, the Indie is reporting that amongst other things the government are intent on abandoning the trade bill working its way through parliament heavily amended to keep relevant regulatory issues under proper legislative control and not under government whim, and starting over with a new bill that goes back to Henry VIII powers and turns the situation back into a rush for deregulation.

It's like a 4 way Mexican stand off.

I'm assuming Boris doesn't want to continue with his deal as he knows sensible amendments could succeed, but does that include a confirmatory referendum? Are the numbers there?

I still think May's deal was better than what we're facing now. Even if she had wanted a deal like Johnson's eventually, she would have needed to successfully negotiate it before we broke away from EU alignment. A rapid US trade deal would have been out of the question. As things stand now, danger is lurking around every corner.

It is generally agreed there aren't the numbers there for a referendum in the present HoC, even if it might be closer than before.

Ok so me, Hindle, CJA and her significant other met up this weekend and guess what?

We had hugs and talked about stuff and it was interesting.

And isn't that what makes life fascinating? We all need our preconceptions questioned and what better to meet one of you?

We all imagine what each other of us here is like. I can confirm that that picture you have of anyone is probably very wrong.

My imagined picture of CJA was wholly wrong.

I beleive Hindle had to describe me as 'weirdly normal'.

I can live with that.
