I haven't really paid much attention to the GE today but like the slightly barbed comment at the end of this from AS...

Former Labour MP John Woodcock to stand down from parliament
John Woodcock, who was elected as Labour MP for Barrow and Furness but who left the party last year, has announced that he won’t stand again for election because he and his partner, the Spectator journalist Isabel Hardman, are having a baby. He has children by his previous partner now living in Edinburgh and, as he explains in an open letter to his constituents, he thinks his new family circumstances would make continuing as an MP for a Cumbria seat impossible.

Woodcock strongly criticised Jeremy Corbyn’s handling of antisemitism allegations when he resigned from the Labour party, although at the time he was also facing a misconduct allegation himself.

In his letter Woodcock says he had been looking forward to defending his seat as an independent. But his chances of re-election would have been minimal. Independents very rarely win in UK parliamentary elections, and in 2017 Woodcock had a majority of just 209 over the Tories.

I liked this bit from his speech.

He says what matters is that MPs can use parliament to hold the government to account.

Yes, the very last thing that we need is someone like Eleanor Laing or Edward Leigh (thankfully gone in the 1st round) simply letting the government have its own way all the time.

BBC pushing the "wouldn't it be good for the speaker to be a woman this time" line. Nothing to do with second placed Eleanor Laing being a Tory (pushover) I'm sure.

Anyway, technically it should be a Labour MP this time and Hoyle seems a solid enough choice to me. He's had one of those quiet, serving his constituents kind of parliamentary careers, with experience from sitting on committees and his current deputy speaker role, rather than the high flying cabinet/shadow cabinet ambitious careerist type of background which would be less suited to the day to day drudgery of keeping order imo.

I'm trying to avoid the brewing bunfight that is tactical voting "predictions". I think a certain amount of tactical voting is inevitable and necessary with our less than satisfactory FPTP system, but relying on anyone but your own opinion to inform your choice is a recipe for ending up feeling misled and diddled, unfortunately. Everyone thinks everyone else should vote for their own preferred party in these scenarios and it will inevitably end in tears because large swathes of these recommendations will always end up being wrong.

Former Labour minister Chris Bryant has won the surprise backing of Michael Gove and other Government ministers in the race to succeed John Bercow as House of Commons Speaker.

The news came as Mr Bryant said he would encourage MPs to get off their mobile phones in the Chamber and ban MPs from calling each other "traitor" during debates.

Excellent - Hoyle winning would have pissed them right off then. Unless it's a double luff and that was the kiss of death to Bryant.

More a shame from a feminist point of view, rather than personal to Harman.

You say she's not suited, but she would do the job in her own way.

Boothroyd was very good. I'll pick on (say) Michael Martin who's generally thought to have been pretty average, I believe.
We'll have achieved equality when we have a pretty average female Speaker.

Michael Gove has been urged to apologise for sharing an antisemitic tweet from a Twitter account falsely claiming to be run by a Labour member.

The cabinet minister took to social media to urge Jeremy Corbyn and some of his high-profile supporters to condemn a tweet saying "we can't trust Jews", from a user claiming to be a member of Labour and Momentum, the Corbyn-backing grassroots network.

But Labour and Momentum both confirmed the account "Joe Woods #JC4PM" did not belong to any of their members, with Momentum accusing Mr Gove of attempting to "smear us through association".
