There is simplifying to make understandable and there is misrepresenting to the degree that warps the debate. We didn't pay,not based on only income on the least ,assets-not counted ,earnings-not counted ,presence of carer etc the default was pay towards. In pre Tory county maladministration it was free for all.

The Tories specifically introduced a "death tax" on the sick/disabled who choose/will choose not to be in a home,if the barstewards start their nonsense;those that didn't get sick/disabled at the "correct time"encouaged ,no doubt by ,in our case the equivalent of half way to one dialysis session a week.

At the end of his speech, the Sky News presenter, Samantha Washington, strikingly made no attempt to challenge or correct any of Johnson’s false statements. This was just the latest example among many of the British media letting Johnson get away unchallenged with lies, falsehoods and fabrication.
As a natural tory he seems to feel personally affronted by what's happening. It's hard to have any sympathy but we can still be thankful that he's speaking up.

Can't decide which is more annoying/depressing.

'Realists' earnestly discussing BJ's post-election Brexit strategy; or

Centrist Remainers panicking about the polls, after spending the last 4 years slagging off JC. If we do end up staying in the EU it'll be despite these people, not because of them.

Who might ever have thought such a strategy could produce sub-optimal results?

Speaking at the launch, Arlene Foster, the DUP leader, firmly ruled out supporting a Jeremy Corbyn government in a hung parliament. She said:

. . . So there are many, many reasons why we couldn’t in all consciousness support a Jeremy Corbyn-led administration. (Politics Live, Guardian - my emphasis)
Did she really say that - or is it an Andrew Sparrow typo?

We've got our Labour poster up.

Our local 6th form doesn't do the computer science A level our son wants to do anymore. Just stopped it last year, so students currently in year 13 got to do it but my son won't. Lack of funding, basically. I'm so mad about it.

10 miles in either direction to get to a 6th form that offers it. Not really feasible generally, impossible for my son with ASD.

Schools were in a really good place when my kids started but 9 years of meddling, funding cuts and privatisation have taken their toll. Funding for 16-19 year olds has been slashed by about 20%. We'll never get those wasted years back. Or the next 5, if the comfortably off vote in Johnson to deliver their pointless Brexit. And it will be mostly the comfortably off, low paid working class leave voters are dwarfed by the numbers of provincial Tories, with their second properties and private pensions, obsessed with "getting Brexit done".

:(

We're all negatively affected by crap Tory policies all the time, but this one particularly hurt. The government even had the gall to big up the importance of giving kids the opportunity to do proper programming rather than just basic IT at the same time they were making the funding cuts that would ensure even fewer schools would be able to afford to offer it.

Things are going to be so tough for young people if the Tories get in again, yet I'm not seeing much of the recognition of the damage they are doing which was evident the last time Labour kicked them out, so I'm not very hopeful.

At least the local 6th form has good maths and science courses and he's thinking of doing a Btech in creative media instead of the computer science, which might be interesting. It's very stressful, though. Everyone legally has to stay in education until 18 but a lot of 6th forms have minimum GCSE grade requirements. God knows what you're supposed to do if you don't qualify for any of the 6th forms in your area.

I need to :zen: I think!

I’m not watching it live,no doubt there’ll be plenty of clips around if anything interesting happens.

Stephen Bush thinks BJ is mad to agree to it on the not unreasonable grounds that he’s never come out on top in a tv debate and JC usually does.

I teach btec creative media, it's nice, it's very ICT based BUT the single award course - (the 'extended certificate') only has one practical unit, which is very 'applied ICT' based, and the rest is written coursework and an exam, whilst the double award (the National Diploma) is much much much more practical and does a lot more high-level software stuff (although again on an 'applied ICT' basis of learning to use nice things like the adobe creative suite and final cut.)

So far as I can make out (and this really is anecdote and not research, I'd be pushing it to even calling it 'knowledge') Computer Science teaching has struggled terribly because we've spent twenty or thirty years ignoring it and just teaching ICT applications (at one point there actually was a GCSE in MS Office Applications) and we haven't got any people trained to teach programming - and those that can, who have learnt it all in HE, want to earn as programmers.

I have a funny feeling we've had the computer science conversation before...

Just before the debate, someone at the FT was tweeting polling that Corbyn's personal popularity was at -60 and that Johnson's was just in the positive. I think YouGov's (already clearly misleading) 51/49 call for Johnson, in light of that, should hardly be more catastrophic for Johnson. But that's should, not will.

And nobody seems to have mentioned this yet, but during the debate, the official Conservative Party twitter account with blue tick verification, was renamed 'factcheckUK'. How they thought they could get away with that I have no idea. Why they thought it would be worth it even though they'd get caught is also beyond me.

The front page of the Independent online is quite something.

Shrewsbury maternity trust could be prosecuted for corporate manslaughter
An interim report into the trust, leaked to The Independent, revealed a catalogue of clinical failures which listed the deaths of dozens of babies and mothers as well as more than 50 children who were left permanently disabled. The number of cases being examined by the inquiry team has now risen to more than 600.
My two daughters were born there, and the eldest's birth was very difficult for her and my other half. Both were fine, but this is all especially difficult to read.

Leader's debate report.

Tonight the debate came from a studio somewhere that looked like a shit version of Tron. Chairing the debate was Julie Etchingham who I've never heard of before because I never watch ITV news. Perhaps I would put it on to keep a dog company if I had a dog, but that seems about the extent of its usefulness. Anyway as chair of the debate she was awful, failing singularly to get either leader to answer questions they didn't want to answer, which was her job, and she sucked at it.

And before getting to the leaders I just thought I'd mention the doctor who read his question out while staring into the camera with a weird creepy look on his face. What was all that about? He can keep well away from my prostate.

For the Tories we had Boris Johnson. In my previous dealings with Mr Johnson he'd always come across as a fat lying sack of shit so I was interested this evening to see if there had been any improvement. Quite the opposite. In fact Johnson repeated so many lies that he tore the very fabric of spacetime itself. There are other realities where what Johnson says is true and yet others where his lies exceed even the preposterous ones he regales us with and evidently the Universe got confused or pissed off by it all and other Johnson's began popping into existence. There was dog Johnson who some lazy owner had left sitting watching ITV news who kept barking and humping the lectern whenever any woman whatsoever appeared, there was Pinocchio Johnson whose vast nose had to be supported by what appeared to be some kind of enormous hovercraft, there was didn't go to Eton Johnson who apparently won Robot Wars with bus shaped contraption called 'Brexitar'. So many Johnsons, eventually they began to coalesce into one gestalt hideous super Johnson and it had to be burned with a flamethrower. So kudos to ITV for being prepared for such an eventuality. Sadly the truth is he simply blathered on like he always does offering lie after lie, refusing to answer any questions about his trustworthiness or moral character, while repeating the same soundbites over and over again. He is an utterly despicable human being and he'll probably win the election.

For Labour we had Jeremy Corbyn. Jeremy reads from an autocue like he's giving directions to people who don't speak english, despite the fact he's talking to millions of people, in English. Jeremy also seems to have defied the laws of physics when it comes to his brexit postion. While quantum physics obviously allows him to hold a superposition of two views at the same time, classical Newtonian physics does not allow a surface so slippery no traction can be gained upon it whatsoever. And yet Jeremy has achieved this. Not in some clever way, he just avoids the question over and over again. And this was his downfall tonight. We all know why he won't answer the question, and it has nothing to do with his own personal view, it's because Labour are afraid of losing leave voters. And any thinking being can understand why. But however you look at it, however fair you might think it seems, it puts them at a disadvantage and tonight it left Corbyn looking distinctly shify in a debate he'd have won easily otherwise.

And as such in my view it was a score draw.

Also I won't be around for the QT on Friday because I'm going axe throwing.

Just one other observation on the leaders debate, when asked about the effects of climate change Corbyn began by talking about how it would most affect the poor. And it obviously will, thinking about it for mere seconds with a reasonably functional brain would lead to the same conclusion.

And yet, from a chunk of the audience we heard groans and an 'oh here we go' as if what Corbyn was saying was even remotely controversial.

I mean let's just look at those in South Yorkshire worst affected by the floods. Could it be people unable to afford insurance?

And this is just the beginning.

More Tories thought Corbyn did well in debate than Labour voters thinking the same of Johnson, according to ⁦@YouGov⁩.
So says Peston, the problem is Labour needed Johnson's trousers to fall down and him shit himself on stage and it didn't happen.
