More budget for Ofsted is good. Getting rid of the outstanding school exemption is good. But the no notice inspections thing *again*? Really?

Schools get 1/2 day's notice right now - call goes to the school at midday the day before. Enough time to get paperwork together but nowhere near enough to paper over any gaps you might have.

It's all so negative, isn't it, this obsession with catching people out, tripping them up. Schools are being incentivised to cover up problems, to brush them under the carpet, when really they should be incentivised to identify and highlight problems. There should be cash and support for schools that are struggling, mentoring from successful heads, that sort of thing, but as things stand if you're found to have problems all you get is sanctions and criticism. It leads to serious head-in-the-sand, la la la, everything's fine mentality that more than anything winds up parents suffering the consequences of underfunded, struggling schools.

Not sure all would agree with that.

Johnson says the Garden Bridge in London was "a viable project" when he left office as mayor. This is simply not true.

This is what we are leaving the EU for. A minor tax adjustment on sanitary products, an immigration system designed by Australia to facilitate increased immigration and old style, socialist bailing out of British businesses as favoured by Jeremy Corbyn. I can see that British bias in government procurement will have appeal, which is why it's at the top of the list, but the likelihood of it offsetting the loss of frictionless trade with our nearest trading partners seems pretty remote to me and besides, it's not exactly difficult to frame your procurement requirements to favour a national bidder even within the EU, the remarkable thing being we've never bothered when everyone else seems to be doing it.

Now being asked why he's hiding from Andrew Neil.

To be fair, Johnson did kind of answer the Andrew Neil question there, albeit more via demonstration than a direct response.

What is this "shark fin soup" thing?

"Shark fin soup" evolved from a question about fox hunting which Johnson attempted to use to "seamlessly" bend the conversation back to Brexit via the Tories new found enthusiasm for animal welfare, which will apparently benefit from the new freedoms he will achieve with his Brexit deal which he seems to be suggesting will enable us to ban shark fin soup.

All of which seemed to be about shoe-horning in his new Brexit related catchphrase "freedoms", attacking Jeremy Corbyn for not offering any "freedoms" and talking long enough to dodge the Andrew Neil question.

1/ This Conservative party summary of EU state aid rules includes a false/misleading claim. It says that "aid must be approved by the EU institutions to be lawful", referring to Article 108 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU.

This is untrue, as there's an exception ->

It wasn't to do a "I'm sorry, my son can't come out to play today" was it?

The things the IEA are criticising are the things Johnson's only talking about to attract Labour leave voters. They won't survive the election anyway.

When he was being asked about it last night he seemed to imply he had been specifically invited by the organisers of the show. He gave no indication of whether he expected his son to be there or, indeed, Gove.

Odd that no-one can ever say what the optimum rate should be but they are quite clear that it is "lower than it is now"...
