Excellent Tweet from Corbyn this morning, saying he is aware that the media are about to circulate some compromising photos of him.

My seat (3am - current tory majority 6627, MRP predicted majority conservative hold 16% clear) - the count officers have apparently warned the candidates that from what they're hearing they should expect a long night and a recount.gilsey wrote:Likely declaration times here.

Johnson votes in Westminster rather than his own constituency. Wouldn't it be lovely if he lost by a tiny margin.

Morning all.
Not a very nice start to the day - I picked up a phone message from last night as I'd been in GB meetings, to hear from my cousin that my aunt had died yesterday. Haven't seen here in a while but we spoke a few months ago.
Anyway, Y5 swimming done and went in voted in the nursery that's attached to the school but can be closed off so it can be used as a polling station without affecting the rest of the school. Weather isn't great.

Weather is going to be roughly what you would expect for mid-December - now, what genius decided an election today might be a good idea?
The (relatively) good news is that there isn't going to be anywhere where it buckets down all day, as was the case here just on Tuesday

It could have been much worse weather. And we're kind of hardened to it aren't we?!

The Tunnock's caramel bars have arrived! Thank you, Mr. citizen. Please help yourselves. Cocoa and tea in the kitchen.

Mr. citizen has been out campaigning for Labour for months; he's out today. He's sunshine wherever he goes.
Re: Thursday 12th December 2019
That's a good thing because the sun has declined rising today, I think.

Anecdotal reports of strong turnout in some areas, though as ever these should be treated with a pinch of salt.

It got worse here before it got better. The rain has actually stopped now. Dark and dreary, though.

Still scarred by the memories of 2015 - so many (including on here) predicting not just a bad Tory result but big increases in turnout.
(in the event it was barely up on the previous election, which of course helped explain the "surprise" outcome)

My personal view today is that I haven't got a clue what might happen. I take comfort in a range of things I've read and seen and I'm certainly not without hope but I can't honestly say I'd be surprised at any outcome.

Re: Thursday 12th December 2019
Media report this GE is unusual and the results very unpredictable yet relentlessly conclude it'll be a Tory majority or minority return.
Re: Thursday 12th December 2019
I thought there'd be greater voter turn out in the 2017 GE. I was disappointed more didn't.AnatolyKasparov wrote:Still scarred by the memories of 2015 - so many (including on here) predicting not just a bad Tory result but big increases in turnout.

Re: Thursday 12th December 2019
I thought the implication of your returning officer's comments were that turnout might be high and the result close
Re: Thursday 12th December 2019
I think the interesting thing is that according to polling this is supposed to be becoming more of a safe tory seat - the regional press are predicting a clean sweep right across the county for them, including ultra-marginal Telford and a range of notionally safe Labour seats in the black country . I don't know where the civic folks get their information from, but if they are hearing 'recount' then that suggests the result could be nothing like the polling.PaulfromYorkshire wrote:I thought the implication of your returning officer's comments were that turnout might be high and the result close

Re: Thursday 12th December 2019
For the first time ever I went to vote not entirely sure who to vote for (safe Labour seat, Tory kicked out for antisemitic remarks), but as my pencil wavered over the options a voice came into my head, it was CJA saying 'Vote Labour', a piece of advice they repeated many times when we met, and I duly did so.
I'm not entirely sure if this was an act of free will on my part or CJA has brainwashed me, but either way despite my reservations the deed is done.

From the G:
Does this sort of thing work? The Tories are sending targeted ads from the PM to voters in specific constituencies saying their seat is “one of the nine seats needed to Get Brexit Done” ... but they are sending them out to dozens of constituencies.
The adverts have been posted to voters in more than 40 constituencies, saying they are “one of the nine”

Re: Thursday 12th December 2019
Edited to add -Sheffield newspaper the Star reports that Labour has complained after a blitz of anti-Jeremy Corbyn posters were plastered across the city overnight.
It says placards that read “Would you trust this man with your children?” featuring Corbyn’s picture have been placed outside schools and other places. The posters described him as “an extremist” and said he defended terrorists.
The Star said Labour had reported the matter to the police but South Yorkshire police told the Guardian it was a matter for the council. (Politics Live, Guardian)
I'd have thought the "Would you trust this man with your children?" line would certainly make this a police matter.
Re: Thursday 12th December 2019
In Liverpool, 48 voters were given ballot papers for the wrong constituency, the Liverpool Echo reports.
They were given papers for Wavertree, rather than Riverside, at a polling station which serves both constituencies.
[The returning officer said that] votes wrongly cast would be declared null and void and that they were attempting to contact the voters in question to allow them to re-cast their vote.
Re: Thursday 12th December 2019
Problems have also been reported at Southampton University where the students’ union says at least 76 people have been turned away from the polling station despite being registered to vote.
One of the seats in the city - Southampton Itchen - was decided by just 31 votes in 2017, the Tories Royston Smith holding onto the seat by the skin of his teeth. (Politics Live, Guardian)
Re: Thursday 12th December 2019
