I found this analysis useful. It dispels some of the sense of Labour losing huge swathes of country it 'ought' to hold. There's no 'ought' about it and I feel getting sucked into a quest to regain a certain stereotypical type of northern Labour voter would be a mistake. Labour needs to find a way to reach out of the major cities and win over provincial voters everywhere, not just in the north. The myth of the red wall
The red wall was a patronising generalisation about a huge swathe of the country

I hope Laura Pidcock will be back in parliament before too long.

Nikkei concludes: response to Brexit by companies with operations in UK is only just starting. Johnson won the election with the support of manual workers, so if he cannot stabilise employment at this turning point for the UK’s industrial structure, they will be disappointed. 8/8

Our next-door neighbour is in Australia visiting her brother for best part of a month, usually you would envy her at this time of year.

Contrast with Kinnock Jnr droning on about "coffee bars".Willow904 wrote:https://thecritic.co.uk/the-myth-of-the-red-wall/

(to which somebody replied, there are over a dozen coffee places in *Leigh* - which one do you want to visit to ask people why they voted Tory?)

Good morfternoon.
Boris Johnson hints he may pursue plan for bridge between Northern Ireland and Scotland
Johnson has hinted at his support for the construction of a bridge linking Scotland and Northern Ireland several times in the past, most recently in September, although one expert has described the idea as “about as feasible as building a bridge to the moon”. (Politics Live, Guardian)
Re: Thursday 19th December 2019
Apparently The Bridge between Denmark and Sweden is 7.5km long, as against 35 miles.

We came together & took a stand when others wouldn’t. It was right to shine a spotlight on Britain’s broken politics. But having taken stock and with no voice now in Parliament, we begin the process of winding up our party. Thanks to all who stood with us.
If I'm not here, then I'll be in the library. Or the other library.
Re: Thursday 19th December 2019
Today, I found myself in front of a television and thought at first I was watching and hearing a satirical sketch, a comedy.
It was BBC coverage of Johnson giving the Queen's speech in the House.
I don't watch much television or listen to the radio.

It was pouring down rain all day and I got soaking wet even using appropriate hiking gear.

Re: Thursday 19th December 2019
I only saw a small part. An SNP MP responding to Johnson's speech asked Johnson to listen and not play with his phone . Johnson responded his phone was more interesting. I wasn't mistaken; that really happened.

On the electability level I approve of Clive, very much NOT another "superannuated student politician" (TM frog222) , but he did his bit on a tour in Aghanistan ... and however much he may personally not have been in love with nukes, he was intending to support Trident as LP policy until that snake Seumas Milne ordered otherwise almost in mid-speech to Conference .
I suspect he's not seriously aiming for 'leader' , reading so far !!! , but laying down some markers for the whole LP to think about ?

He seems sympathetic to automatic reselection for MPs, I wonder of one of the supposedly more "moderate" candidates will back it?frog222 wrote:Only just beginning to read it, but enjoying the alliterationsAFinch wrote:Good evening.

This is interesting, from the US...
From Christianity Today, the evangelical newspaper founded by Billy Graham and an unequivocal Trump supporter until now.“the facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents.”
