Morning all. Not in that happy a mood after someone ran into the back of me yesterday and it's pouring.
Barclay also claimed the disbanding of his Department for Exiting the European Union was an “an exciting opportunity in government”.

He said after the department is scrapped former officials will be redeployed to other departments.

Barclay said: “It’s an opportunity actually to pay tribute to the many officials in the department who have built up a massive amount of expertise. And what we can then do is socialise that expertise across Whitehall into the many departments that will be dealing with trade, because all areas of the government will then be involved in the future trade deal.
That sounds like a recipe for success doesn't it?

Not sure it's meant to achieve anything apart from getting rid of the Committee.

Prime Minister could have baked in Parliamentary votes to try to strengthen his position. Used Parliament as positive theatre in the UK, now he's sitting so comfortably.

In short - the changes to the WAB look like they were planned by a govt expecting a majority of 8 not 80

Boris Johnson certainly has a large majority of Tory MPs, but is that the same as a large majority for super hard, business damaging, Brexit? Is the split in the Tory party between the ERG extremists and the business friendly moderates over or is it just beginning?

One interesting thing I noticed is that relatively few of the new Tory intake appear to be ERG-friendly.

Johnson's majority isn't much bigger than Cameron's was in 2010, and given that Cameron rode coach and horses through the lib dems wishes on almost everything in that parliament I think we're overstating things a little to say that the tories haven't had this kind of power since before 92.

I'm aware that isn't even a very very small blessing.

I take the point about the tory intake but just as when he won the leadership, for all the 'one nation' bollocks in the talk everything he's actually doing sits very happily on the right of his party.

"Judges in Brexit bus legal case face complaint over ‘links to Boris Johnson’"
https://metro.co.uk/2019/12/20/judges-b ... 39848/amp/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
However, Mr Ball has since discovered the judge is a member of the Garrick gentlemen’s club along with Stanley Johnson (Boris’s father) and cabinet minister Michael Gove.

He told Metro.co.uk: ‘If a judge was hearing a criminal prosecution case against a member of a street gang and he failed to disclose that he spent his social time in a pub frequented by the accused’s father and fellow members of this gang it simply wouldn’t be accepted.

‘But with the Garrick the rules are different. Is there a danger that we have one rule for one social class and another for the others?’

Have we seen this?

Chris Cook on David Cameron...

https://members.tortoisemedia.com/2019/ ... 1od3HPzN_k" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Indeed, it has taken Cameron himself to reveal how poor he was at his job. His recent memoir is intended as a defence for his career. It is, perhaps characteristically, an accidental guilty plea to much more serious charges. The consequences of them will hang over this new government and the UK for years to come.

If it's a shit bill, oppose it.

Why is it Labour are always so bad at this? The SNP oppose the Tories even when they agree with them. That's how people know they're different.

:wall:

(Hint: 'Blocking Brexit' is no longer a thing. This is about what kind of Brexit. Boris' Brexit is bad for the UK. End of. Any Labour MP who doesn't oppose it with knobs on can sod right off).

None whatsoever imo.

If he'd anticipated getting such a large majority, he might not have cut parliament out of the process. He's missed some opportunities for more 'Legislation as performance art'

Good evening everyone.

This is Paul Mason on what was happening at "the top" of Labour and its relevance to the election result. Also on what next.

Some really indefensible "tactics" if he's right. Unfortunately I am inclined to believe him.
