Good morfternoon.
Town of the Year push falls flat after failure to realise site is a city

Wolverhampton, chosen as launch location for contest, has not been a town since 2000

A new government Town of the Year competition has backfired spectacularly after officials failed to realise that it was being launched in a place that has been a city for 19 years.

Civic leaders in Wolverhampton expressed incredulity after the communities secretary Robert Jenrick was described in a government press release as “kicking off his countrywide town tour in Wolverhampton”.(Guardian)

Though this just shows the silliness of the cities/towns dichotomy anyway.

Given that they were content to vote for the party who have closed down so much of the city in the last nine years, I struggle to think they will care about this.

Lots of people who switched to the Tories seemed to think so, and we can't tell them they are mistaken in this because that would be "patronising".

It seems in a lot of areas of the NHS you have to ring up and chase appointments to get them at all these days. If you don't know to chase them, you fall through the gaps. Older people seem to understand this better than younger people in my experience and have fewer qualms about jumping up and down until they're seen. It really is appalling this young person has gone blind through lack of treatment. I don't really understand the NHS response about cataracts either. If you are short on staff, surely glaucoma patients should come before cataract patients as cataracts are generally less urgent compared to glaucoma where you only have a small window to diagnose and prevent permanent damage.

Labour are falling into the same trap* as they did with austerity and immigration, which is to believe that if you lose an election you cannot continue to criticise the main policies of your opponent.

It's at the beginning of that twitter thread, Starmer trying to oppose it. Of course it wouldn't pass but you know, opposition, the clue's in the name.

@PickardJE
lots of angst at the shadow cabinet today as Keir Starmer proposed an amendment to extend Brexit transition period by two years if no EU trade deal by July - prompting uproar from at least 8 shadow cabinet ministers who spoke out against the idea....he ended up dropping it

I had heard about that, but there is an argument that such things should be left until after Brexit is "done" on Feb 1st.

When a lot of people will come to realise that it isn't "done" after all, that is the time to strike.

(and of course if Starmer gets the leadership, he will have more freedom to pursue the path he wants)

If there are people in the shadow cabinet still choosing to conflate 'leaving the EU' with 'the manner in which we leave the EU' then please let's get on with the leadership election.

My son's been a bit poorly and one of the guinea pigs is very poorly so it's been a bit hectic and I've been feeling pretty zonked out. Hopefully things will settle down soon.

And yes, I very much agree with Wren-Lewis. On all three points Labour have started (or are in danger of starting) a term in opposition by saying the Tories were right and they were wrong. Why do they keep doing this? The result is those voting Tory feel vindicated and are likely to vote Tory again while those voting Labour end up feeling unrepresented and betrayed.

HindleA wrote:Not sure about Willow's point re older people,my dad died before he should, partially be because didn't have the energy to pursue and the problem which finished him off put down to "being old"
Well, I did say "in my experience" as I wasn't sure if this was a general thing or just that I know a lot of pushy older people :)

Having said that, using a service more frequently makes people more adept at using it and older people as a whole (though not necessarily on an individual basis of course) tend to interact with the NHS more than younger people. And, indeed, give each other tips, such as chasing up appointments by phone.

Your point is equally valid, though. Sometimes those who need the NHS most are least able to battle through the bureaucracy of appointments effectively because they are more ill. When my brother-in-law had a severe head injury his ability to access timely appropriate care was severely compromised by the fact he had a head injury and barely knew what he was doing when a useless nurse in a minor injuries unit sent him home with a wad of bandages held to his head because they were out of tape.

All of which is longhand for the NHS is underfunded and unnecessarily complicated by the internal market and tendering out of contracts.
