"No-one should have to face a night on the street and we have a moral duty to support those who need help the most"

Not really into the moral bollox,not least because it leads to little more than self aggrandisement by any other name, salacious scrutiny as to level of "vulnerability" /"neediness" with the attendant judgemental wankers ,in pure economic terms you judiciously invest to save money rather than making the non vulnerable vulnerable and the vulnerable having to be particularly sufficiently vulnerable for you to apply your hand wringing hypocrisy.

"Severe disability premium and the enhanced disability premium are benefit supplements specifically aimed at meeting the additional care needs and costs of severely disabled people living alone with no carer. They were scrapped under universal credit."

Hurrah for simplification.

After Brexit, Britain’s hard line on immigration won’t hold
Jonathan Portes

I'm recovering from an illness. I'm certain it's that preventing my understanding Portes and not his writing. What do you all make of it?

After 1 January 2021, free movement will end and EU and non-EU citizens wishing to move to the UK will (unless they are Irish citizens) be treated the same. Despite this shake-up, it’s still unclear what Britain’s new immigration system will look like.
---
Contrary to the hopes and fears of many, Brexit looks less like it will make a decisive turn towards restricting immigration. Instead, consistent with the more benign aspects of our history, it may signal a different form of openness.
From 'it's unclear' to 'different form of openness'.
The second and last paragraph of his article
Portes begins his article with 'it's still unclear what Britain's new immigration system will look like' then inexplicably ends with benign, different openness.

Some on here may live to see us rejoining the EU, but not all will.

20 years minimum I reckon.

It really pisses me off that re-nationalisation is always described as "the last resort" - when it seems fairly obvious to me that it should be the "first resort".

Trump's lawyers are using an interesting update on Nixon's 'If the President does it, it can't be illegal argument' - "It's in the public interest because anything that might help the president be re-elected is in the public interest'.

Alan DanHodges Dershowitz! "But Professor Dershowitz! Why are you giving time to help a rich creep like Von Bulow when really you're dedicated to the ordinary folks?"

a) Because we can't allow rich people to investigate and prosecute without the police
b) I think you'll find important people are important.

Skegness is so bracing.
I had a Steve Bell calender once which had his drawing of Gorbechev in seaside gear prancing along the skeggy beach with the caption 'Glasnost Is So Bracing'.

I think there's a fairly heavy dose of another guardian writer saying 'they're not going to go down the more extreme paths they keep talking about' even though so far that's exactly what they've continued talking and which they now have the capacity in parliament to do. He seems to be saying 'lots of sectors are going to continue to need low wage casual work immigration so it will have to continue'. I'm not so sure.

If it's bad news for labour it'll probably be released on the same day as the Russia report.

If it isn't we may never see either of them. :?:

There are some areas where they may well go down the extreme paths, but I'll be surprised if immigration is one of them. May proved how hard it was to keep immigration down even when she really, really wanted to, I can't see Johnson having that level of commitment to it, he doesn't care.

Of course a Brexit-induced recession is the sure way to reduce immigration.

Alexander Clarkson
@APHClarkson
When Whitehall sources feel they have to make it clear that Johnson will not roll over in trade talks it's a sign his entire previous track record indicates that there is a high chance he will roll over in trade talks.

Alexander Clarkson
@APHClarkson
The same Whitehall sources, journalists and analysts who in August 2019 told us Boris Johnson would never cave over the border in Ireland, now tell us he will never cave over alignment with the EU.

He might as well do the speech in Florence.
