The Guardian has previously revealed that two former Conservative prime ministers, Theresa May and David Cameron, lobbied the Bahrain royals to award the contract to Petrofac, before it was publicly known the company was being investigated by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

However, newly–released documents reveal Fox wrote a letter to the Bahraini crown prince promoting Petrofac four months after the SFO announced an investigation into the firm for suspected bribery, corruption and money laundering.

The Sun’s Tom Newton Dunn has more on the problem posed by unexploded ordnance (UXO) to the proposal to build a bridge between Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The biggest problem: MoD admits more than a million tonnes of UXO could have been dumped into Beaufort's Dyke over a 31 year period. 14,000 tons of phosgene gas rockets in 1945, and several thousand tonnes of conventional shells every year up to 1976.

Michael Gove has told businesses that trade with Europe they need to prepare for “significant change” with “inevitable” border checks for “almost everybody” who imports from the EU from next year.

The findings from the ONS come with potentially damaging implications for living standards for the current generation of adults under the age of 65, who are poised to enter retirement in worse financial health than their parents.

According to research from the insurer Royal London, someone who owns their home outright could expect to maintain their living standards on a pension pot of about £260,000, while someone who rents privately would need almost double this, at about £445,000.
