Morning.

I'm quite shocked to learn that this fine upstanding MP was lobbying for a company even after it was announced they were being investigated for all kinds of shady business!

Fox lobbied Bahraini royals for oil contract with Tory donor's firm

https://www.theguardian.com/business/20 ... onors-firm
The Guardian has previously revealed that two former Conservative prime ministers, Theresa May and David Cameron, lobbied the Bahrain royals to award the contract to Petrofac, before it was publicly known the company was being investigated by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

However, newly–released documents reveal Fox wrote a letter to the Bahraini crown prince promoting Petrofac four months after the SFO announced an investigation into the firm for suspected bribery, corruption and money laundering.

"Q: Is the government committed to building a bridge between Scotland and Ireland?

The spokesman says he has nothing to add to what the PM said about this at PMQs a few weeks ago. The PM said the idea had some merit.

So officials are looking into this, he says. He says:

Work is underway looking into the idea of a bridge.

Q: Is the PM concerned that his previous record with bridges does not inspire confidence?

The spokesman does not accept this. He says:

The PM is ambitious in terms of infrastructure projects. He is looking at a wide range of schemes across the United Kingdom that could boost productivity.

Asked for more detail of the work being undertaken, the spokesman says he has not more to add.

Q: Can you say roughly how many officials are working on this?

No, says the spokesman.

Q: Recently the Treasury told ministers not to waste money on projects. Would this count as a waste of money?

The spokesman did not accept this.

Q: But it is being seriously considered?

Yes, says the spokesman."

There are probably many officials racking their brains trying to work out to say "Prime Minister, is this project altogether wise?"

The Sun’s Tom Newton Dunn has more on the problem posed by unexploded ordnance (UXO) to the proposal to build a bridge between Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Tom Newton Dunn

@tnewtondunn
Replying to @tnewtondunn

The biggest problem: MoD admits more than a million tonnes of UXO could have been dumped into Beaufort's Dyke over a 31 year period. 14,000 tons of phosgene gas rockets in 1945, and several thousand tonnes of conventional shells every year up to 1976.

Michael Gove has told businesses that trade with Europe they need to prepare for “significant change” with “inevitable” border checks for “almost everybody” who imports from the EU from next year.

In the first official confirmation that the government is going to impose trade barriers post-Brexit, he warned there would be checks on food and goods of animal origin, plus customs declarations and mandatory safety and security certificates required for all imports.

Home ownership among people aged 35-44 has plunged – ONS
Adults in their mid-30s to mid-40s are three times more likely to rent than 20 years ago
The findings from the ONS come with potentially damaging implications for living standards for the current generation of adults under the age of 65, who are poised to enter retirement in worse financial health than their parents.

According to research from the insurer Royal London, someone who owns their home outright could expect to maintain their living standards on a pension pot of about £260,000, while someone who rents privately would need almost double this, at about £445,000.

"Before I tentatively dropped my ballot paper in the box, I feared that making the jump from being a Labour voter to being a Tory one was going to mess with my head far more than it actually has."
- Giles Fraser
"The thing I never understood about the Right, when I was on the Left, was how this pessimism about human nature could be so much more the compassionate option.
---
What I saw in Conservativism was a metaphorical shrugging of the shoulders as people slept on the streets or queued up at the food bank. But I wasn’t looking carefully enough.

For whereas the Left generally prefers to discharge its moral obligation to others through the transformation of society, the Right — sceptical of the grand plan — prefers to discharge it through particular acts of individual kindness and practical generosity. Though not ever believing that such acts will totally change the world, the Right fights back against the darkness nonetheless, little by little and at local level. Without the showy drama of the revolutionary, the Conservative responds on the human scale, organically."
Responds organically. What the hell does that even mean.

Organic beans. Just the one can. To one food bank user. The Tory has fulfilled their obligations in a Christian manner, so says Giles Fraser.

Of course not. Fraser is arguing for private charities dispensing hand outs instead of democratically accountable public services provision.
