I suggested previously that Johnson would feel he couldn't afford the negative publicity of HS2 not going ahead as it's the opposite of the image he's trying to create of 'Brexit Britain gets things done'. I suspect he'll even relish the environmental fight, no doubt painting protesters as anti-British moany, remainers, but the weeping pensioners being kicked out the homes they've worked hard all their lives for and are not being anywhere near adequately compensated for could prove less easy to dismiss as acceptable collateral damage.
