UK state pension worst in the developed world
Goes on to say we can't even afford the worst pension in the developed world and despite low paid millenials and women already facing worse pension prospects after recent changes, UK pensions will have to be cut even further or NI contributions rise. Now remind me what the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, tried to do a couple of years ago but was shouted down by self-interested, self-employed journalists....

Things going swimmingly then?

Home Office’s immigration boss quit ‘after run-ins with Priti Patel’

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... -row-patel
Mick Jones of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), the largest trade union for Home Office staff, said that Patel’s approach to various immigration issues had led to Thomson’s resignation.

“He’s indicated to our reps that it was mainly because they had had major run-ins. It was clear that [Patel] had come in and was trying to do things that they [Home Office officials] just weren’t comfortable with and [Thomson] sort of said ‘I’m off then’.”
But of course when things inevitably will go wrong, it will be the Civil Service's fault...

And from the DT...

Top civil servants on Tories' 'hit list'

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/20 ... -hit-list/
Boris Johnson wants to replace a series of mandarins as part of a move to change dramatically the approach in some of Whitehall’s most influential departments, Tory sources claim.

Senior Tories said No 10 sees Sir Tom Scholar, the Treasury permanent secretary, who previously led David Cameron’s attempted renegotiations with the EU, as “offside” on Brexit and his approach to the economy.

Sir Tom is said to top a “s---list” of permanent secretaries No 10 wants replaced over claims that they are significantly at odds with Tory ministers and advisers, who have been buoyed by Mr Johnson’s landslide election win.

More delays? Well, I am surprised at that...

Anger over fresh delays to decision on Arcuri-Johnson probe

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... esh-delays
Now London assembly members fear that the continuing and “surprising” delay by IOPC investigators could mean that no announcement will be forthcoming before the period of “purdah” that begins next month before the London mayoral elections.

They say they were initially told that the IOPC investigation into Johnson – who, when he was mayor, had responsibility for policing in London – would be “done and dusted” by the end of November, allowing the GLA’s oversight committee to resume its own investigation into Johnson’s relationship with Arcuri.

"The world is fast approaching a tipping point in the spread of the coronavirus, according to experts, who warn that the disease is outpacing efforts to contain it, after major outbreaks forced Italy and Iran to introduce stringent internal travel restrictions and South Korea’s president placed the country on red alert."

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... xperts-say" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I think it's correct to say humans are now closely connected in a way historically unprecedented. What are the indirect consequences of the disease? Think of how pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs and gadgets are created, grown, harvested or manufactured. One link in the production chain goes down and we have no boxed blister packs of clonazepam tablets, for example.
