Senior civil servants use language with great precision: Sedwill’s message was clear and intended, and it makes sense precisely in the context of a significant gap opening up between serving the government and serving the national interest.

Re news elsewhere it would appear that someone in Labour HQ has been reading "How To Shoot Yourself in the Foot"...

Unless of course there's things out there that we haven't been told about yet but will emerge eventually.

I think this is a pretty good example of Labour trying to do something which is eminently justifiable whilst, at the same time, hanging a sign on their back that says 'Kick me'.

I'm not shocked in the least by the bloody title of the Panorama programme.

As the DWP can't be surprised by its own attitudes to disabled people, perhaps the "shock" is that other employers don't share them.

A 40-year-old woman, who had visited Israel on a tour of the Holy sites, is now hospitalised in isolation in Mytilene, the capital of Lesbos, also suspected of having contracted the virus. Although an official announcement is expected later today, doctors say the case has all but been confirmed with the woman’s two children being withdrawn from school at their mother’s request.

The case has raised fears of an outbreak on the island currently hosting over 27,000 migrants and refugees with most housed in notoriously unhygienic conditions in Moria, it’s biggest camp. The woman, who works in a supermarket in Plomari, had by her own admission been in contact with countless people upon her return from the trip.

I don't know what to say.

Until recently, the complaint was that Labour weren't dealing with such cases (and certainly not fast enough) rather than the opposite.

They're not going to successfully counter the accusation of being too soft on anti-Semitism by overreacting on Islamaphobia, I'd suggest.
Either we can have free and open debates about contentious issues or we can't.

And "why now?" is a concerning question, if the conclusion many people are jumping to is correct.

But one thing is clear: Phillips cannot treat Muslims as a homogeneous group when it suits him, then later deny they are racialised. Whatever the outcome of Labour’s inquiry into his Islamophobia, there’s no denying he has a case to answer.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, the Manhattan US attorney Geoffrey Berman said: “Contrary to Prince Andrew’s very public offer to cooperate with our investigation into Epstein’s co-conspirators, an offer that was conveyed via press release, Prince Andrew has now completely shut the door on voluntary cooperation and our office is considering its options.”

In November, Andrew said he was “willing to help any appropriate law enforcement agency with their investigations if required”.

Prince Andrew won't voluntarily cooperate in Epstein inquiry, prosecutor says

I don't know if it's an overraction, I was just saying if it's an overreaction Labour is just digging themselves deeper and deeper into the pit of prescribed purity of thought.

FWIW I do think Labour's reaction to gender critical members has definitely been an overreaction.

And none of this helps Labour defend it's decisions on anti-Semitism, where they are right to try to separate deliberate hate speech and prejudice from unconscious bias in a complex debate, the latter requiring discussion and education rather than recriminations.

Willow -- agreed on Labour digging itself ever deeper into a great hole !

It began with their acquiescence over many of those accusations of AS which nearly all of the rest of us, average citizens, would have classed as stretching 'TROPES' to breaking-point, and I, and I suspect many more would have told the BoD and the JLM to get a fucking life .

Seeing supposedly adult politicians running scared of any lobby , in this case the current Israeli gov & UK 'friends' , is a sobering sight . I was hoping Emily Thornberry would not fold, but eventually she did. Not much time for Burgon, but I don't think he did ?
