Morning all.

Back from the usual Saturday shop and I find...

No rice
No pasta
No toilet rolls

We only needed the third but can make do with tissues of which there were a few boxes left.

I'm pretty sure it'll be back to normal next week.

I don't get why prediction markets think there's a ~60% chance of a recession this year but that Trump is a ~55% favorite for re-election. One of those forecasts is almost certainly wrong.

I saw a thread yesterday on what would happen if the US election had to be cancelled, Trump would be out on 20 Jan 2021. Speaker would be POTUS, failing that for some reason then the President of the Senate, who would be a democrat. President Pelosi!
Unless he can change the Constitution, of course, you wouldn't put it past him to try.

I overheard a literal shriek of terror in Sainsburys - "They're out of Andrex!"

There wasn't a lot of choice, it's true, but they did have toilet roll, which is all you need if you've completely run out and if you haven't, well, Tesco is only 10 minutes away and they had plenty of Andrex, yesterday, it was their own brand they were completely out of. I think we can figure out why.......

I'd dislike running out of toilet paper but hygienic alternatives are available at home. It's not the first thing on my list of must buy. Fresh fruit, vegetables and milk require frequent replenishment. Rice, lentils, canned beans, sardines, dried fruit, oats, fragrance-free soap and laundry detergent, lime-scale prevention tablets, disposable sponges, heavy-duty bin liners and must remember getting alcohol to clean the new thermometer

We have Sunday morning opening at some of my local supermarkets, and I'm planning another stocking-up shop tomorrow, including beer !

It'll be interesting to see what was being 'attacked' today . Yesterday there was no 60 and 90% medical alcohol left, and the wipes that were also antiviral (H1N1 specifically) had all gone too.

No toilet roll or kitchen roll.
No pasta.
No tinned tomatoes of any kind, no tomato puree, in fact no tomato products at all.
No eggs.
No flour.
No frozen peas.
No Ibuprofen or Paracetemol.

And those are just the things I looked for, there were plenty of other empty shelves.

Oh how I amire that keep calm and carry on spirit of the great British public.

Local Sainsbury's here out of toilet rolls
Along the empty shelves were Sainsbury logo signs printed/plastic-covered asking all to consider others and limit purchasing no more than five of one product. No dried basil either, annoying Mr citizen. When I lived in the US, I recall regularly seeing workers using disposable gloves as a matter of course. I only remember that now having seen some workers using them today.

It all makes sense now and I regret the two minutes I suspected him of selfishness. He's likely delivering lasagna and toilet rolls to those without both as we type.

NHS England issued guidance advising trusts to give full sick pay to staff who have to self-isolate because of the disease, but there is growing concern nearly 400,000 carers on zero-hours contracts may miss out. There are fears that carers, who earn little more than £8 an hour on average in the private sector, may turn up for work when they are unwell to avoid losing pay because of illness or self-isolation.

I think it more likely they continue working because no one else will fill their place leaving people without any care at all.
Social care provision in the UK shouldn't be separate from the rest of the NHS.

So... I might have this wrong, but...

China - c80,000 cases and c3100 deaths - spread of infection appears to be highly controlled because of lockdown measures
Italy - ~~15,000~~edit- c20,000 infected, over 1000 deaths, massive measures in place to restrict infection.
South Korea - c8,000 cases, c100 deaths,massive measures in place to rescrict infection

Three of the worst case countries but typical of what's going on everywhere else in the world. Put controls and restrictions in place, fight infection, protect the sick and vulnerable.

UK - the government are actively persuing a plan that should see infections rise to something like 40,000,000, which would very very roughly, at a 'better' estimate of 1% fatality, mean we would expect to see around 400,000 deaths.

EDITED AGAIN TO ADD - estimated UK military and civilian combined casualties in World War II - c450,000.

I think we need to start telling public figures - politicians, doctors, opinion formers and spreaders - who are pursuing this, that when this lunacy has passed from the country they will never work again, that we will hold them to account.

Precisely, not to mention around 30% of the 'healthy' population who catch Coronavirus will require medical treatment, that's (very roughly) 12 million people.

Thankfully the sheer callous insanity of this herd immunity approach seems to be sinking in and the backlash and u-turns have begun.

Just two nights ago Steve Baker on Question Time claimed there was 'scientific consensus across the UK' in support of the government's actions. That was laughable then and after the letter from hundreds of scientists demanding more restrictive measures today I'd love to hear him try and repeat it.

Scientific advisors give a range of options, they don't dictate policy, Johnson and his twisted cronies will have chosen this course of action because it's cheap and they had to do very little. I'm not sure what they thought was going to happen when people realised half a million of them were going to be sacrificed.

I wouldn't be so sure. This sounds suspiciously like the "cocooning" of vulnerable people necessary in the let everyone get infected herd immunity bollocks scenario. I'd rather children were protected from getting it as much as possible too by closing schools so they can still see gran and grandad occasionally without killing them but then, hey, I'm crazy and think limiting deaths as much as possible until a vaccine is ready is more important than protecting GDP.

A vaccine that won't be available to us until sometime after it's available to the EU nations, and at a greater cost.

I've said to my school that I think I have to choose between quarenteening myself from work (public transport/secondary school) or my family and that I really should be allowed not to choose school, and they've said that sounds fair enough but can you bear with us for a bit.
