Are you shitting me? I definitely didn't finish off my last bottle a couple of weeks ago after a friend definitely didn't give me any at the end of last Autumn because it's actually illegal to distill apple brandy in the UK without a licence.

Our head's description of this for us - the building is closed, the school's open, the children need and want us, get on with it.

This friendly place may well approve of the fact that I have made a forum to use as a virtual classroom with my sixth form groups. Done it before and it worked really well (actually started doing an MA dissertation on using online spaces in teaching, and this was in about 2008, but then the school stopped paying for the 'Virtual Workspace' thing we had and all of my work disappeared.)

Well, here the (cough) supply of unofficial stuff is dying out , as the old hard-case mobile distillers pass away . Before the 1987 hurricane I had two old apple trees that gave a ton of fruit, which made 600l of 4 or 6% alcohol cider , some of which ended up being distilled ...

I replanted 20 small trees, produced the same . Getting old now, will reduce that activity !

EDIT The 'old boys' would distill (cough) 20l for someone who had a licence, then go on far into the night producing ten times as much unofficially .

Adam, my brother's been told tonight that he could be 'repurposed' into another public role outside schools, I'm wondering if you've heard anything similar?

It sounds ridiculous and I only give it credence because my friend who works for the council has been told he could be called back at any time to work in a different department. He showed me the text.

You can freely choose to weaken your own economy, its reputation for stability, and all those connections that underpin it. But if a major crisis happens, that economy may well be thought less able to withstand the forces unleashed. This isn't ideology. It's cold logic.

Not wholly surprising but that was my last week in the library for the time being.

I did manage to smuggle out (with permission) the whole pile of sheets on the post-war building survey o that'll have to be my Wednesday work from now on.

Time to make a list of all those things you never have time to do normally.

And then when it's all over, have a look and think "Nope, didn't have time for any of those..."

I wonder if being an academy changes this for me - I'm not employed by Wolverhampton City Council, I'm employed by the Central Learning Partnership Trust. We haven't been told anything other than that it is expected of us that we 'teach' from home, and that so far is is possible we follow schemes of work. We have an area of the school website that will host work we upload for students to use, and where they can upload their responses, and we're also making sure there are paper resources for students although how they are going to get to teachers working at home I have no idea. LSAs and even cleaners and caterers are being told they are still employed and still being paid.

Yes. Some responses below the line under Aditya Chakrabortty's article today surprised me. I didn't think describing the inadequacies of government's actions regarding COVID-19 was so controversial.

Thanks Adam, my brother works for an LEA school and as such is being told he is essentially a council employee and is on notice that he could be called in to perform another job.

Given the sweariness of his texts he seems less than happy about this.

And I'm one of them, but what nobody mentioned is wearing black clothes all the time means they don't show the dirt and you can keep wearing them until they smell.

Quite what 'smell' means is of course subjective, but I find a general sniff of the crotch area of trousers and armpits of t-shirts gives me a general idea of my stench.
